The Road Back to Bellwether
The Road Back to Bellwether
Read aloud
An old man places a child's wooden horse on the table, its paint worn smooth by years of handling. “My daughter was lost in the Bellwether flood,” he says. “I have a name, a town, and one last reason to hope. Find her, and let her decide whether she wants to see me.”

The hook
Set the scene
Tomas Vale receives the party in a small room above a shuttered mill. A wooden horse, a faded map, and a bundle of unanswered letters lie on the table. Tomas explains that a clerk in Greyhaven recently wrote to him about a cooper's apprentice named Mara Fen, who remembers a lullaby and a flood, but he will not send the party to demand that she return.
How Tomas Vale asks
Tomas approaches the party through a local innkeeper or community notice.
He offers payment for a careful search and stresses that the party must not force Mara to return.

5. A Message, Not a Demand
The cooperage courtyard at closing time, followed if invited by a quiet riverside table.
Mara hears Tomas's message and decides whether to meet him. If she agrees, the party can arrange a neutral meeting; if she declines or asks for time, the party carries her answer honestly.
NextThe party returns to Tomas with Mara's choice, beginning either a careful reunion or a correspondence that may continue beyond the adventure.
Behind it
What people believe
Years after a devastating flood separated miller Tomas Vale from his daughter, a lead has surfaced in the distant town of Greyhaven.
Tomas asks the party to learn whether Mara is alive and, if she is, to carry his message and let her choose whether to meet him. The trail crosses dangerous wetlands and a town wary of strangers, but the greatest challenge may be giving both father and daughter room to speak honestly.
Background
Nearly eight years ago, a flood destroyed the riverside hamlet of Bellwether Ford.
During the evacuation, miller Tomas Vale and his young daughter Mara were separated. Tomas searched the roads and shelters for years, while Mara was taken in by a caravan and eventually settled in the hill town of Greyhaven under a different surname. A recent shipment bearing her childhood name has brought the two lives close to crossing again.
The stakes
A careless search could expose Mara to unwanted pressure, damage her trust in Tomas, or turn a long-awaited reunion into a painful confrontation.
A patient approach can give both people the chance to begin again without erasing the years they spent apart.
Encounters
2The Reedbed Crossing
Combat or avoidable hazard
A flooded track through waist-high reeds, with shallow pools, a half-collapsed footbridge, and patches of firm ground.
Foes
Territorial wild boars
Marsh dog
ComplicationThe animals are startled and protective rather than malicious. Loud noises, food, or a successful approach can disperse them without a fight.
ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, use one boar and let the dog flee after the first round. For a stronger party, add a second boar or make the reeds difficult terrain across most of the area.
The Ferry Storehouse
Combat or negotiation
A disused riverside storehouse with stacked crates, a broken loading ramp, and a narrow loft. Crates provide cover and the ramp is unstable.
Foes
Rill Sedge, human smuggler lookout
Two hired toughs
ComplicationThe smugglers have taken Anwen's satchel, which contains an old token Mara may recognize. They would rather escape than fight, and may bargain if cornered.
ScalingFor an easier encounter, one tough abandons the lookout at the first sign of resistance. For a harder encounter, add a second lookout who raises the alarm. Use the game's suitable low-level humanoid statistics and adjust hit points to the party.

4Tomas Vale
QuestgiverQuestgiver, a retired miller who has spent years searching for his daughter
WantsWants to learn whether his daughter is alive and, if she is, offer her the choice to reconnect.
“I have one scrap of a name and a face I can barely remember. Please, find out whether she wants to see me.”
Mara Fen
Witness and missing daughter, now a cooper's apprentice in Greyhaven
WantsWants to protect her independence while deciding whether to meet her father.
“I built a life here. That does not mean I have forgotten where I came from, but I need time to decide what comes next.”
Anwen Rook
Ally, the retired caravan medic who helped raise Mara
WantsWants to keep Mara safe and prevent Tomas's grief from becoming a demand that she return.
“I did not hide her from him. I gave her a roof when the roads had none, and she chose to stay.”
Sergeant Pell
Wildcard, Greyhaven's cautious town watch sergeant
WantsWants to prevent fraud and keep the peace in Greyhaven, while quietly hoping the family can reconcile.
“A reunion is a lovely story. A forged travel writ is still a crime, and I will not let strangers drag a resident out of my town.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
A well-made wooden horse keepsake, meaningful to Mara but not magical
A practical travel kit supplied by Anwen, containing dry food, bandages, and a lantern
On a win
The party confirms Mara's identity, delivers Tomas's message without coercion, and gives father and daughter a chance to meet if both agree.
Success means a truthful opportunity for reconciliation, not a guaranteed return to Tomas's home. If they meet, the first conversation is awkward, tender, and unfinished, with both deciding what contact should look like next.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party does not find reliable records or a witness in Greyhaven.
- Tomas receives no answer and resumes his search alone; the party can still find Mara later, but she may be less willing to trust the strangers who arrived without warning.
- The party presents forged documents, threatens residents, or tries to force Mara to leave town.
- The watch detains the party briefly, and Mara avoids them until they repair the harm by explaining themselves and asking permission to pass along a message.
- The party fails to recover the keepsake from the smugglers or the marsh.
- The satchel is lost or damaged. The reunion remains possible, but the party must rely on conversation and Tomas's memories rather than the keepsake.
Complications (d6)
- 1A sudden rainstorm washes away the faint tracks leading from the old ferry landing; the party must find shelter and ask locals for directions.
- 2A peddler recognizes Mara's childhood nickname and tries to sell the party a false lead to the abandoned north road.
- 3The Greyhaven watch stops the party after a forged letter claiming Tomas has legal custody is discovered among their papers.
- 4Anwen's mule bolts with the satchel containing Mara's old keepsake, sending it tumbling into a reed-choked ditch.
- 5Mara hears that strangers are asking after her and leaves town for a day to think, delaying any meeting without ending the chance of one.
- 6A frightened marsh dog mistakes the party for poachers and draws a pair of territorial wild boars toward the trail.
