The Last Light in the Garden
The Last Light in the Garden
Read aloud
The stars above the Garden of Stars have begun to disappear, one by one, while the flowers below glow with a cold blue light. At dawn, the garden's paths will lose their guiding power, and several travelers are already missing in the surrounding mist. Senior gardener Ilyra Venn offers a reward to anyone who can find the source of the failing light before morning.

- 3Confront Veyr and uncover the truth behind the dimming stars.
- 4Choose the fate of the Witness and the Garden's guiding light.Optional
The clock
Dawn arrives after four major scene beats. At dawn, the Astral Well either stabilizes, goes dark, or releases a surge of uncontrolled light. Use a complication between scenes or whenever the party spends significant time resting or retracing its route.

The hook
Set the scene
The party arrives at the Garden's iron gate shortly after sunset. The stars above the walls blink out in a slow sequence, while luminous petals drift upward against the wind. Ilyra Venn meets them beneath a cracked mosaic of the night sky, gives a brief account of the missing travelers, and asks them to reach the Astral Well before dawn.
How Ilyra Venn asks
Ilyra approaches the party at the Garden's iron gate with a lantern whose flame has turned blue.
She offers payment for recovering a bellflower seedpod and asks that the party avoid damaging the central Well. Her urgency is real, though she withholds her part in creating the current crisis.

Behind it
What people believe
The Garden of Stars is a renowned walled observatory-garden whose luminous flowers guide travelers through the dangerous mist beyond its walls.
Its light is fading, several travelers are missing, and the garden's keepers need help restoring the Astral Well before dawn. The trail leads through unstable paths and a guarded conservatory to the heart of the Garden.
Background
The Garden of Stars is a walled observatory-garden grown around a crater of pale glass.
Its night-blooming flowers collect starlight in their petals, and its old stone paths trace constellations no longer visible in the sky. For generations, the gardeners have used the blooms to guide travelers through the surrounding mist. The garden's central Astral Well has begun to dim, and the paths outside it are losing their way.
The stakes
If the Astral Well fails, the Garden's paths will stop guiding travelers through the mist.
People already lost beyond its walls may never find their way home. If the Well is saved carelessly, the Witness may remain imprisoned or the Garden may lose its light forever.
Encounters
2The Moonlit Conservatory
Combat or evasion
Glass-roofed greenhouse packed with waist-high silver flowers, narrow stone paths, hanging lanterns, and a shallow irrigation channel. The flowers provide concealment but shed bright pollen when disturbed.
Foes
Lumen-Moth Swarm
Thornbound Keeper
ComplicationEvery round or exchange, the flower heads turn toward the brightest light. Characters who extinguish or cover their light can move unseen, while bright illumination draws the foes toward that source.
ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, use only the Lumen-Moth Swarm and let the Keeper block paths rather than attack. For a larger or more experienced party, add a second Keeper and have the swarm split to threaten separated characters.
The Astral Well
Combat, negotiation, or ritual challenge
A circular crater lined with black glass, crossed by three floating stone platforms. Starlight rises from the center in a visible column; the rim offers cover, but the central platform is exposed and unstable.
Foes
Veyr Tallow
Astral Husk
ComplicationEach attempt to disrupt the ritual shifts the constellations underfoot. A character who rushes without studying the pattern risks being isolated on a drifting stone or briefly pulled toward the Well.
ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, Veyr begins exhausted and the Astral Husk acts defensively. For a larger or more experienced party, the Husk creates a second unstable platform and Veyr uses the terrain to separate the group. Veyr can be persuaded to help rather than fought.
Cast
3Ilyra Venn
QuestgiverQuestgiver and senior gardener
WantsSave the Garden and its keepers without revealing that she authorized the first experiment on the Well.
“Please bring back the bellflower's seedpod. If the Well goes dark, the roads home will vanish with it.”
Senn Oriole
Ally and junior astronomer
WantsFree the captive star-spirit, even if doing so permanently changes the Garden.
“The stars are not a map. They are witnesses, and one of them has been made to watch us suffer.”
Veyr Tallow
Antagonist and disgraced celestial scholar
WantsUndo his own ritual and survive the consequences, while avoiding punishment from the Garden's keepers.
“I asked for one night of borrowed light. I did not ask for a living prison.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
A Starfold Lantern, a custom lantern that shines steadily in mist but goes dark when pointed at a concealed celestial presence.
A vial of bellflower nectar, a one-use custom aid that can briefly illuminate a hidden path or inscription.
On a win
The Astral Well is stabilized or transformed, the immediate danger to the Garden is ended, and the party returns with the bellflower seedpod or a clear account of what was done.
The exact outcome depends on whether the Witness remains bound, is freed, or enters a negotiated arrangement with the Garden.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party cannot recover the bellflower seedpod before the next dawn.
- The garden paths lose their guiding light. Nearby travelers become stranded in the mist, and the party must return later with a new way to navigate or accept a dangerous detour.
- The party defeats or drives off Veyr without stabilizing the Astral Well.
- The star-spirit remains bound, but the Garden's keepers learn what happened. Ilyra is suspended from her post, and Veyr disappears with knowledge of the ritual.
- The party destroys the Well or releases its energy without directing it safely.
- The Garden survives, but its flowers stop collecting starlight. Its keepers can no longer guide travelers, and the surrounding settlements must find a new route through the mist.
Complications (d6)
- 1A silver vine lashes across the nearest path and seals it with thorny loops. Cutting it releases a burst of dazzling pollen that makes nearby creatures see false constellations for several minutes.
- 2A shower of glassy petals falls from the canopy. Anyone crossing the open path must find cover or risk cuts and a loud scattering that alerts nearby guardians.
- 3The party's shadows detach and point toward the Astral Well. For the next hour, they lag behind their owners and reveal the party's direction to anything tracking by starlight.
- 4A garden gate rotates to face a different path. The group can force it open, negotiate with its speaking hinge, or lose time finding another route.
- 5A bellflower opens nearby and repeats the last spoken secret it heard in a voice like the speaker's. The echo carries across the garden and may expose a concealed plan.
- 6A sudden starless patch swallows every source of light in a small area. A soft voice from within offers to restore the light in exchange for a treasured memory.
