The Opening

For three nights, every well in Haramor has whispered the names of people who died generations ago. At dawn, the city’s great reservoir begins to drain upward into the sky, and Senior Water-Priest Ilyra Venn begs you to descend beneath the city before the third bell rings. If you fail, Haramor will have no water by tomorrow night.

Set the Scene

Begin in Haramor’s central market at the hour when the city’s fountains normally open. Instead of water, they release a thin mist carrying whispered names. Merchants argue, children repeat phrases in dead languages, and a crowd gathers around a dry fountain where Nemi Daro has collapsed after hearing his brother’s voice from beneath the paving stones. Ilyra Venn arrives with temple guards, dismisses the crowd, and privately asks the characters to help before panic spreads. She provides a water-priest’s token, a rough map, and a warning that the old reservoir works were sealed for good reason.

Senior Water-Priest Ilyra Venn

Ilyra approaches the characters in a curtained side room beneath the Fountain Temple. She first offers official authority and payment, then admits that the city guard cannot be trusted because several wardens have already joined the Drowned Choir. If challenged about the temple’s history, she becomes evasive rather than openly hostile.

Stakes

If the characters succeed, Haramor retains its water and learns the truth about the temple’s abuses. If they fail, the reservoir drains, the city descends into panic, and the Thirsting Bell begins calling to other ancient waterworks across the region.

Ticking Clock·The Thirsting Bell will resonate for the third time at dawn after the adventure begins. The first resonance causes the wells to whisper, the second opens the lower reservoir works, and the third drains the Blackglass Reservoir and awakens the Bell fully.

Background Lore

Haramor was built around the Blackglass Reservoir, an ancient basin that feeds the city’s canals, cisterns, and terraced gardens. Beneath the reservoir lies a prehuman mechanism called the Thirsting Bell, designed to draw water from deep stone during droughts. For centuries, Haramor’s water-priests maintained the Bell in secret, sacrificing memories of the dead to keep it silent. A recent earthquake cracked the old seal, and the Bell has begun calling to the city through dreams, wells, and flooded tunnels.

What the World Knows

Haramor is suffering a supernatural water crisis. The city’s wells whisper the names of the dead, the Blackglass Reservoir is behaving impossibly, and an underground cult is attempting to awaken an ancient bell beneath the city. The characters are hired to enter the forgotten reservoir works, stop the cult, and prevent Haramor from losing its water supply. The city’s water-priests insist that the Bell is an ancient weapon, but rumors suggest the temple has hidden the truth about the reservoir for generations.
