The Opening

For three hundred years, Johnny Hood's treasure has been dismissed as a sailor's lie, but a newly recovered fragment of his map points toward Blackwake Reef. The map also bears a warning: "Find the stash, and find me with it." Before the party can leave, a dying messenger delivers one final clue: Johnny's crew left behind a recording that can only be played beneath the reef.

Set the Scene

The adventure begins in Port Merrow during a public auction of salvaged pirate artifacts. Old Pell Brine interrupts the auction, identifies a broken compass as Johnny Hood's, and reveals that its needle points toward Blackwake Reef only when held near seawater. Before he can explain more, Captain Silas Rook's agents attack, forcing the party to protect Pell, secure the compass fragment, and choose whether to pursue the fleeing thieves or save civilians trapped in the collapsing auction hall.

Stakes

If the party fails, Captain Rook gains enough wealth and legitimacy to dominate the Sapphire Reach's trade routes. If they succeed but mishandle the remains or recording, Johnny's restless crew continue haunting the coast. If they honor the dead and distribute the treasure according to the clues, they can change the balance of power across the region.

Ticking Clock·Rook's expedition has a three-day lead and plans to open the vault during the next extreme low tide. After the tide turns, Blackwake Reef remains accessible only during rare lunar events. Each major delay gives Rook time to remove another safeguard or recruit more privateers.

Background Lore

Johnny Hood was once the most celebrated pirate on the Sapphire Reach, famous for outwitting navies, rival captains, and even his own crew. His greatest haul vanished shortly before his death, and every generation since has produced a new theory about where he hid it. Johnny's final voyage ended at Blackwake Reef, where his ship broke apart in a storm and his body was never recovered. The surviving crew scattered, carrying fragments of a secret they swore never to reveal.

What the World Knows

Johnny Hood was one of the most brilliant pirates ever to sail the Sapphire Reach. Before his death, he vanished with a legendary stash and supposedly hid it somewhere near Blackwake Reef. The party must follow his surviving clues, survive the wreck and the reef, and recover the treasure before Captain Silas Rook claims it for himself. Johnny's corpse is found with the stash, holding a wax cylinder that can be played on a special device hidden beneath the reef. When played, the cylinder records Johnny and his crew singing Leave Her, Johnny, revealing his regret for everything he abandoned when he became a pirate.
