The Sword of a Thousand Warriors
The Sword of a Thousand Warriors
“A stolen relic, a village's last promise, and a thousand dead warriors waiting to choose their fate.”

“Veyrhold's elder places an empty scabbard on the table and tells you that her village has been without its guardian sword for twenty years. The weapon is now held by a warlord who plans to use the souls inside it to conquer the valley. Return the Sword of a Thousand Warriors before the next Remembrance Night, or Veyrhold may lose both its protector and its identity.”

The adventure begins in Veyrhold during a cold evening ceremony. Villagers carry empty scabbards and recite the names of the dead, but the final portion of the ritual cannot be completed because the sword is missing. Maelin Thorne asks the party to follow a trail leading north toward Cauldris's fortress. She offers an old map, a ceremonial token recognized by the sword's spirits, and the warning that the blade must be returned by Remembrance Night in three days.
Maelin Thorne
Maelin approaches the party after the public remembrance ceremony. She first asks whether they are willing to carry a burden that may speak to them, then explains that Veyrhold has no army capable of confronting Cauldris. She offers a ceremonial token that can calm the sword's spirits once, but warns that force alone may make the blade impossible to return.
Rumours
d5 · table- 01The sword remembers every hand that has ever held it, including the hand that stole it.
- 02Blackglass Fortress has no gate on its north wall, yet no one has ever crossed that side alive.
- 03A ghostly army marches beneath Veyrhold every winter, waiting for its weapon to return.
- 04Lord Cauldris does not sleep near the sword. He leaves a different guard beside it every night.
- 05Ser Jorren Vale returned from the theft alone, but claims he cannot remember the final hour.
If the party fails, Cauldris gains control of an army guided by generations of battlefield memory and begins conquering the valley. If the party succeeds without resolving the spirits' conflict, the sword may protect Veyrhold while continuing to demand war. The deepest stake is whether the heroes return a weapon or end a centuries-old cycle of using the dead for the needs of the living.
Background Lore
For seven centuries, the village of Veyrhold has kept a solemn promise. Whenever war threatened the valley, its champions carried the Sword of a Thousand Warriors, an ancient blade said to contain the courage, memories, and battle instincts of every defender who died protecting the village. The sword was never meant to be wielded for conquest. It was meant to return home after every campaign, where it would be sealed beneath the Hall of Names until the next generation needed it. Twenty years ago, Veyrhold's last war captain vanished with the sword. The village has since endured raids, famine, and political division, while rumors claim the weapon lies in the fortress of a warlord who intends to awaken the spirits bound within it.
Veyrhold was founded by soldiers who swore that their greatest weapon would always return to the village after war. The Sword of a Thousand Warriors vanished two decades ago when its last guardian disappeared. Now the blade has resurfaced in the hands of Lord Cauldris Venn, a warlord gathering an army in the northern fortress of Blackglass. Cauldris intends to use the sword to win a coming war, while Veyrhold's elders believe its return is necessary to preserve the village's ancient protections. The party must recover the weapon and carry it home before Remembrance Night.
