The Opening

The tavern falls silent when a mud-streaked patron places a sealed silver cup on your table. She offers enough gold to change your fortunes, claiming the relic beneath Brackenford can stop a monster before it reaches the town's wells. Then she adds, quietly, that the monster may already know your names.

Set the Scene

The party begins in the Spilled Cup, a rough tavern near Brackenford's old pumping station. Veyra sits alone beneath a cracked sign, wearing travel-stained clothing and keeping one hand near a locked satchel. She offers a large advance payment for recovering a silver relic from the abandoned cistern. If questioned, she admits the relic can restrain a creature below but lies about how she obtained it and why she needs it. The party can negotiate payment, search her belongings, follow her immediately, gather rumors, or accept the job. Start a contamination clock with six segments. Advance it when the party loses substantial time, fails a major dungeon objective, or makes excessive noise. At three segments, contaminated runoff appears in town. At six, the lower wells are compromised.

Veyra Sorn

Veyra approaches the party in a rough tavern after observing them handle a minor confrontation or display competence. She offers half payment immediately, the remainder upon return, and a bonus if the party avoids damaging the relic. She is evasive but not needlessly cruel. A successful read of her behavior reveals genuine fear and concealed guilt rather than simple greed.

Stakes

If the party delays, contaminated water reaches Brackenford and causes illness, panic, and political violence. If they destroy the Guttermass without understanding it, the magical plague remains active. If they restore or surrender the Cup, they may preserve the town while empowering a dangerous organism or faction. The central moral question is not whether the Guttermass is good, but whether its necessary function justifies the methods used to create and maintain it.

Ticking Clock·Contamination clock with six segments. Advance one segment after major delays, failed sabotage, a prolonged retreat, or a successful escape by Kest Pell. At one segment, black residue appears in the dungeon. At three, Brackenford's lower pipes begin producing tainted water. At five, panic and faction intervention disrupt the party's return. At six, the Guttermass breaches the lower wells and the adventure becomes a containment campaign rather than a clean rescue.

Background Lore

Beneath the town of Brackenford lies the abandoned Cistern of Saint Orra, a dungeon once operated by healers and alchemists. During an old plague, the caretakers created a vast containment organism called the Guttermass, a magical ooze that digests disease, cursed residue, and contaminated corpses. To keep it stable, the caretakers sealed its heart with the Cup of Last Mercy, a relic that regulates what the ooze may consume. Decades later, the patron Veyra Sorn broke into the cistern and stole the Cup, hoping to sell it to a faction capable of saving her plague-stricken brother. The theft disrupted the Guttermass, which has begun digesting the dungeon, spreading tainted seepage toward Brackenford's wells.

What the World Knows

Brackenford's old cistern was abandoned after a magical disaster and sealed by the town's founders. Recently, something beneath it has begun moving through the tunnels toward the town wells. A suspicious patron named Veyra Sorn offers the party payment to recover the Cup of Last Mercy, a sealed relic said to restrain the creature. She wants the relic before the town suffers a catastrophe, but she refuses to explain why she knows so much or why the cup bears fresh blood.
