The Opening

The earth splits beneath your feet, and you fall into a realm where the dead scream beneath poisonous rain. Somewhere ahead, the Doors of Death are opening, and every monster in Tartarus is racing toward the mortal world. To escape, you must survive the journey with Perseus and Annabeth, two former lovers who may hate each other more than they hate the things hunting them.

Set the Scene

The party awakens on a shelf of red stone above a chasm filled with boiling darkness. Perseus is half-submerged in a river of black water, while Annabeth holds him in place with bands of divine force. The moment the party intervenes, the restraints crack, Perseus rises in fury, and a distant bell tolls three times. Annabeth explains that the Doors of Death are opening and that they have less than one hour before the first wave of Tartarus-born monsters reaches the mortal world.

Ilyrion, Last Guide of the Lower Road

The quest begins immediately after the party falls into Tartarus. If a formal questgiver is needed, a dying psychopomp named Ilyrion can appear during the opening scene and offer the party a map made from his own shadow.

  1. 01
The Doors of Death open whenever someone dies while refusing to forgive.
  2. 02
Ahklys's poison does not kill the body first. It dissolves the memory of being loved.
  3. 03
A dead animal spirit knows a path through Tartarus that even the gods have forgotten.
  4. 04
Perseus once drowned an entire army, and Annabeth was the only person who could make him stop.
  5. 05
The gate has three locks, but only one of them is made of metal. The others are made of regret and choice.
Stakes

If the party fails, Tartarus-born monsters flood into the mortal world through the Doors of Death. If they succeed, the immediate invasion is stopped, but the breach remains unstable. The emotional stakes are equally severe: Annabeth may abandon Perseus, Perseus may become the very monster she feared, and the party may be forced to decide whether saving the world requires trusting someone who may be dangerous.

Ticking Clock·The Doors of Death open wider after each major scene. The party has approximately one hour of in-world time before the first monsters can pass through. Increase pressure whenever the party takes a long rest, retreats from a major challenge, or allows a scene to become directionless.

Background Lore

Tartarus is not merely a prison beneath the underworld. It is a living wound in reality, a place where ancient punishments, discarded monsters, and poisonous divine remnants gather. At its deepest threshold stand the Doors of Death, sealed gates that regulate passage between the realms of the dead and the mortal world. Recently, the doors were damaged from within, and the imprisoned horrors of Tartarus have begun pressing toward the opening. Perseus, a sea-born Roman god whose power has become increasingly difficult to contain, and Annabeth, daughter of Athena, fell into Tartarus while pursuing the force that broke the seal. Their only path home is through the Doors of Death, but they must first survive the poison goddess Ahklys, the hostile terrain, the creatures gathering behind them, and the wounds left by their former love.

What the World Knows

The party has fallen into Tartarus alongside Perseus and Annabeth, who are racing toward the Doors of Death before the gates open fully. Ahklys, Goddess of Poison, is using the breach to send monsters into the mortal world, and the party must cross a poisonous landscape, survive impossible creatures, and reach the gate before the escape route becomes an invasion route. Perseus and Annabeth were once lovers, but their relationship fractured when Annabeth tried to control Perseus after deciding that his growing powers made him dangerous.
