The False Paths of Glassroot
The False Paths of Glassroot
Read aloud
Three travelers have vanished on trails they knew by heart, and the latest survivor swears the mountain showed him his own footprints walking ahead. Surveyor Mara Venn will pay you to trace the false lights into the Glassroot Range and find out what is changing the paths. The next caravan leaves in four days.

Cheat sheet
Objectives
- 1Determine where the false lights first appeared and identify a safe route into the Glassroot Range.
- 2Locate the source of the shifting trails and enter Aster Vale observatory.
- 3Resolve the observatory's memory echoes and prevent further travelers from being misled.
- 4Recover the observatory's survey record so the local routes can be reliably remapped.Optional
The clock
The next caravan leaves in four days. Each full day the party delays gives the false projections more time to spread to nearby trail markers; if the caravan departs before the party reports back, it enters the range with an unreliable map.

The hook
Set the scene
At the wayhouse, Mara Venn lays a map across a table weighted with chipped cups. Several trails have been crossed out and redrawn in different hands. Tovin Hale sits nearby, staring at the doorway as if expecting to see someone walk through it twice. Mara offers the party payment, a guide's provisions, and the promise of an additional reward if they return with a usable map.
How Mara Venn asks
Mara presents the party with a marked regional map, asks them to verify the false trails before the next caravan departs, and offers an advance for supplies.
She wants the party to return with both an explanation and a practical route that guides can use.

1. Maps That Disagree
Mara's survey room at a roadside wayhouse, with Tovin, Brother Caldus, and an old regional map.
The party hears Tovin's account, studies the conflicting maps, and chooses what to verify before leaving. Careful questions reveal that the false lights are most common near old trail markers.
NextMara provides provisions and points the party toward the last confirmed marker at the range's southern entrance.

2. The Route That Moves
A steep approach through limestone gullies, shale shelves, and intermittent blue mineral glimmers.
The party follows physical markers through increasingly unreliable terrain. They can discover a safer switchback by tracking windblown dust and old survey cuts, or take the shorter ledge route and face the striders.
The Singing LedgeNextA trail marker points toward a natural cavern, while a recovered brass survey tag confirms that the observatory lies beyond it.

3. A Voice Around the Bend
A flooded limestone cavern whose crystal ribs repeat voices and distort the apparent direction of nearby sounds.
The party crosses the echoing gallery and learns that sound and apparent distance behave strangely near the mineral ribs. Evidence on the cavern wall suggests these effects follow repeated patterns rather than reacting to the party's intentions.
The Echoing GalleryNextFollowing the oldest survey marks leads to a concealed maintenance entrance beneath the observatory's outer stair.

4. The Surveyors' Last Notes
Aster Vale's dusty upper observatory, with collapsed shelves, a sealed log cabinet, and an open view of the night sky.
The group searches the abandoned station for the star chart and the mechanism's operating notes. They can find clues to the correct vane order in a logbook, a ceiling mural, and a set of worn adjustment marks.
NextThe notes identify the central lens chamber as the source and describe a safe method of stabilizing its projections.

5. The Path That Remains
A circular chamber above a deep shaft, where a brass lens throws overlapping paths across the stone walls.
The party confronts Sella and the observatory's defenses, then decides whether to stabilize, remove, or otherwise contain the lens. The result should follow the party's approach, with the vanes and recovered notes offering a noncombat solution.
The Lens ChamberNextWith the mechanism resolved, the party returns to Mara with a verified route, a recovered record, or a warning about what remains active.
Behind it
What people believe
Surveyor Mara Venn hires the party to investigate strange blue lights and shifting trails in the Glassroot Range.
A surviving scout reports seeing his own footprints continue ahead without him. The party must chart a safe route to the old Aster Vale observatory, learn what is disrupting the paths, and keep the next caravan from disappearing.
Background
The Glassroot Range is a chain of limestone hills threaded with translucent mineral veins.
For generations, local guides have followed the faint blue glow of these veins to find safe springs and sheltered passes. Three weeks ago, the glow began appearing in places where no vein exists, and travelers started returning with mismatched memories of the same journey. The phenomenon centers on the sealed observatory of Aster Vale, a pre-imperial research station built above a natural cavern system.
The stakes
If the source remains active, false paths will continue to draw travelers into dangerous terrain, and the next caravan may vanish or become stranded.
If the party mishandles the observatory, they may stop the immediate threat while leaving misleading projections or valuable records in the hands of a rival.
Encounters
3The Singing Ledge
Combat or evasion
A narrow shelf trail above a ravine, with loose shale, one wind-carved stone arch, and a safe but longer switchback below.
Foes
Glassroot cliff strider, a custom small scavenger with a stinging bite
Glassroot cliff strider
ComplicationThe narrow ledge limits movement and makes it difficult to keep the caravan scout out of danger. At the start of each round, loose shale slides across one section of the ledge; a creature there must move or contend with the hazard using an appropriate check or save for the group's rules.
ScalingFor a smaller or lower-level party, use one strider and make the shale hazard a warning rather than a damaging threat. For a larger or higher-level party, add one strider or have the creatures attempt to split the party before attacking.
The Echoing Gallery
Combat, stealth, or negotiation
A broad natural cavern crossed by shallow water, with mineral ribs that carry sound and a raised island of dry stone.
Foes
Cavern lurker, a custom subterranean ambusher
Resonance mote, a custom nonlethal hazard or minor magical nuisance
ComplicationThe echo chamber copies the last loud sound and repeats it from a different direction. Each repetition can draw a creature closer or make a landmark seem to be in the wrong place. Characters can dampen the resonance by covering the exposed crystal ribs or by moving quietly.
ScalingFor a lower-level party, use the resonance mote as a hazard and let the lurker retreat when injured. For a stronger party, add a second lurker or place the confrontation near unstable footing. Avoid combining every hazard with a full-strength creature encounter.
The Lens Chamber
Social, skill, or combat
A circular stone room over a deep shaft, with a central brass instrument, three adjustable vanes, and narrow maintenance stairs.
Foes
Sella Rusk, if the party has become hostile to her
Observatory ward, a custom nonlethal construct-like defense
ComplicationThe lens activates when handled, projecting conflicting versions of nearby paths. A character who rushes to seize it may trigger a brief pulse that disorients everyone in the chamber. The party can steady the mechanism by aligning three visible brass vanes in the correct order, learned from clues in the observatory.
ScalingThis encounter can resolve socially, through careful manipulation of the vanes, or through combat. If the party is level 1 or 2, the observatory ward should hinder and withdraw rather than inflict serious harm. At higher levels, it may defend the chamber until the lens is stabilized.

“I need a map of what is happening, not a heroic story about how you got there.”
Brother Caldus

WantsWants to understand the strange echoes without allowing anyone to disturb the observatory's sealed lower chamber.
“The mountain is not calling to us. It is repeating something it heard long ago.”
Sella Rusk
Rival explorer and wildcard
WantsWants to recover the observatory's lens and use it to sell reliable routes to wealthy prospectors.
“The old instruments can still be made useful. Give me one quiet night with them.”
Tovin Hale

WantsWants the party to believe their testimony and prevent other travelers from taking the eastern trail.
“I followed my own footprints for half a day. They kept going after I stopped.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
Mara's weatherproof regional map, annotated with the party's verified route
A brass survey compass that points toward the nearest marked trail, a custom utility item with no combat benefit
Optional: the recovered star chart, if the party chooses to keep it rather than return it
On a win
The party returns with a stable route and a clear account of the phenomenon.
If they align the vanes, the blue false paths fade over the following night. If they remove the lens, the immediate projections stop but the cavern's mineral glow becomes unpredictable. Mara pays the promised reward and gives local guides the party's verified map.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- If the party fails key navigation or survival efforts, they may still reach the observatory but arrive exhausted, separated from a helpful supply cache, or after a complication has advanced.
- The party loses a day finding a safe route back, and Mara cannot send a rescue team before the next caravan departs.
- If the party abandons the investigation or cannot establish what is changing the routes, the phenomenon continues and the Glassroot Range becomes harder to cross.
- Tovin's testimony remains the only warning, and local travelers continue to suffer disappearances or dangerous detours.
- If the party forces the lens chamber open or leaves the mechanism unstable, the immediate danger subsides but the region's false landmarks persist.
- The observatory's lens is damaged or removed without its stabilizing notes, creating misleading route projections that Sella or another group may exploit.
Complications (d6)
- 1A bank of mineral dust turns the next marked trail nearly invisible; the party must spend time rechecking bearings or risk reaching the wrong ravine.
- 2A harmless-looking echo repeats a party member's voice from ahead, drawing nearby cave creatures toward the group.
- 3A sudden rockfall blocks the return route and exposes a narrow crawlspace leading toward an uncharted survey chamber.
- 4Sella Rusk arrives at the same landmark and offers a useful map in exchange for first claim on any recovered instrument.
- 5A character recognizes a landmark from a memory they do not remember making; accepting the memory reveals a shortcut but costs time spent verifying it.
- 6A spring that was dry on the party's approach begins flowing, flooding a low passage and separating anyone who has already crossed.
