The Opening

The lamps of Qasr al-Wadi are going dark one by one, and the oasis spring has begun flowing backward into the earth. Nadira bint Salim asks you to enter the sealed foundations beneath the palace, restore the Moonwell, and stop the raiders who have come to claim it. She warns that the last lamp will go out at sunset.

Set the Scene

At dusk, the characters arrive beneath Qasr al-Wadi's western watchtower as the final working lamp flickers blue. The oasis is tense: guards argue at the gates, families carry jars toward the palace, and a thin stream of water crawls uphill through the market square. Nadira bint Salim meets the characters beside the dry public cistern, gives them a brass key shaped like a crescent, and tells them that her grandfather sealed the palace foundations after the last great drought.

The palace has no cellar, yet water can be heard beneath its floors.
  2. 02
The emir's soldiers are searching for a brass key shaped like a crescent.

A lamp that burns blue means the desert is thirsty.
  4. 04
Mariam the Lampkeeper claims the old stones whisper the names of people who have not yet died.
Stakes

If the Moonwell fails, Qasr al-Wadi will lose its only dependable water source. If Emir Rashid controls it, he can dominate the desert caravan routes and force nearby settlements to pay for access to water. If the characters mishandle the ancient spirit, the oasis may survive physically while becoming cursed, haunted, or politically dependent.

Ticking Clock·The final signal lamp extinguishes at sunset, approximately four hours after the characters begin. After that point, the Moonwell's guardian becomes unstable, Emir Rashid's forces gain access to the lower palace, and each major delay increases the severity of flooding, combat pressure, and settlement panic.

Background Lore

Qasr al-Wadi is a fortified oasis settlement built around a deep, ancient spring. Its mudbrick towers, shaded markets, and underground water channels have protected caravans for generations. Beneath the oldest palace lies a sealed reservoir called the Moonwell, whose waters once made the surrounding desert bloom.

What the World Knows

Qasr al-Wadi is facing a water crisis caused by sabotage beneath its oldest palace. Emir Rashid al-Kharif has sent raiders to seize the oasis while its defenders are distracted. The characters must enter the buried foundations, repair the Moonwell, and prevent the emir from taking control of the settlement's only reliable source of water.
