The Opening

Hundreds of Tiefling refugees have made a home in the Ashen Vale, land they believed abandoned. Now Lord Groven, a Dwarven noble with a seemingly lawful claim, has arrived with soldiers and demands that they leave. He says he wants justice, not bloodshed, but unless someone can prove the refugees belong there, peace may last only until sunset.

Set the Scene

Lord Groven arrives at the edge of the refugee camp beneath a white banner, accompanied by a small guard rather than an army. Vida stands on one side of the gate with refugees behind her, while Theoden watches from the other, visibly uncomfortable. Groven presents an old iron-bound charter and says that his family owns the valley by right of blood and law, but he offers three days of negotiation before ordering an eviction. As the characters speak with the leaders, a low tremor passes beneath the camp and a black mark briefly appears on the charter before fading.

Ticking Clock·The characters have three days before Lord Groven's temporary truce expires. The final hearing must conclude before dawn on the fourth day, when Groven's legal authority allows him to begin removing the settlement.

Background Lore

For generations, the Ashen Vale was treated as a borderland too harsh and disputed to settle. Recently, hundreds of Tiefling refugees established a defensible camp among the old blackstone terraces, believing the land abandoned after its former owners vanished. Their leaders, the twin heroes Vida and Vido, have turned the camp into a functioning refuge. Lord Groven, a practical Dwarven noble, now arrives with a lawful claim that appears legitimate on its face. The land contains an ancient covenant-stone whose forgotten magic binds ownership to protection of the innocent, but a dark goddess has begun manipulating fear, resentment, and old records to provoke a war that will awaken something beneath the valley.

What the World Knows

The Ashen Vale was long considered abandoned, and Tiefling refugees recently settled there under the protection of the twins Vida and Vido. Lord Groven, a Dwarven lord, has arrived with a credible ancestral claim and intends to reclaim the land. He is stern but reasonable, and he is willing to negotiate if the refugees can demonstrate that remaining is lawful, safe, and beneficial to the region. The characters must keep the peace, investigate the competing claims, and help both sides reach an agreement before fear turns the dispute into war.
