Secret of the Ooze
Recipe: Quest
The Guardian Beneath the Crooked Ladle
Rain needles the shutters of the Crooked Ladle while the tavern's hearth burns with a damp, greenish flame. Beneath the floorboards, something makes the ale in every cup tremble. The patrons pretend not to notice, but the innkeeper keeps glancing toward the cellar door, where a thin line of luminous slime has appeared between the planks. At the darkest table sits a traveler with a sealed coffer, a mud-stained cloak, and the rigid posture of someone listening for footsteps below. They offer the characters a generous payment to retrieve a relic from the forgotten cistern-dungeon beneath the tavern. Their story is polished, but not complete. The deeper the characters descend, the clearer it becomes that the dungeon was not built to hide treasure—it was built to imprison a living solution to a catastrophe no one remembers correctly. By the time the party reaches the flooded lower vault, the seals are failing and the huge ooze is stirring beneath the stone. It recognizes the relic, the patron, and perhaps the characters themselves as fragments of an old disease. Steel may kill it, but steel cannot answer the question at the heart of the dungeon: is the monster a threat to be destroyed, or the last thing protecting the town from something worse?
A warning carved into the cistern gate
“"Do not mistake the guardian's hunger for hatred. It eats what we were too afraid to name."”

Gravetide Ooze, Saint-Marrow
An alchemically engineered cleansing ooze that has absorbed too many memories and now mistakes living creatures for contaminated vessels.

The Secret Beneath the Spilled Cup

The Plague Cistern
Beneath the tavern and the old town cistern lies a three-level laboratory-temple built to contain a magical plague. Its abandoned halls hold false evidence implicating a suspicious bar patron, records of desperate medical choices, and mechanisms that still struggle to keep a vast living ooze imprisoned below.

The Crooked Ladle
The Crooked Ladle is always damp, even during dry weather. Tankards left unattended develop circular ripples, and spoons sometimes bend slightly toward the cellar. The hearth burns blue for a few seconds whenever something large moves beneath the floor. Dogs refuse to enter, while cats stare toward the kitchen and hiss at empty corners. The tavern's regulars have developed habits to cope with the strange effects. They tap their mugs three times before drinking, place coins beneath their plates to keep them from sliding, and never sleep with their backs against the floor. Hesta pretends these are old superstitions, but she follows every one of them when she thinks nobody is watching. If the party spends enough time investigating, they may notice that one support post has been replaced with a salvaged stone pillar from the cistern. The pillar is covered in worn containment script and is slowly becoming slick with translucent residue.

Regional Effect
The Green Seep
A magical containment failure is causing moisture, spilled drinks, and groundwater around the old cistern to shimmer with sickly green light. Nearby creatures experience false memories of drowning, and the ooze's presence grows stronger whenever the dungeon's seals are damaged.
Within the tavern and dungeon, creatures have disadvantage on the first saving throw against acid, fear, or forced movement after a seal-stone is broken; a short rest in the affected area requires a DC 12 Constitution save or grants one level of fatigue-like exhaustion until the next long rest.

Accept the suspicious patron's offer, investigate their story, and enter the sealed dungeon beneath the tavern to recover the relic before the containment fails.
Determine what the huge ooze was created to contain and decide whether the town is safer with the creature alive, controlled, purified, or destroyed.
Reach the lower containment chamber, activate or alter the resonant seal network, and survive the ooze's response.
