Kaelen’s Pyre-Hold
Kaelen’s Pyre-Hold is a fortified temple-city built upward from a series of broad basalt bluffs above an active subterranean magma trench. Its terraces hold courts, barracks, shrines, foundries, archives, and command chambers, all connected by steep stairs and covered bridges. The city exists because the bluffs provide defensible ground above the Crucible Heart’s richest industrial routes. Every district depends on heat drawn from below, and every district fears what else may be rising with it.
Kaelen’s Pyre-Hold
A temple-city above a living trench, where every judgment leaves a burn mark.
“Kaelen’s Pyre-Hold burns with disciplined purpose. Red light leaks through iron grates beneath the streets, warming the soles of boots and turning every polished shield copper-bright. Incense of salt, ash, and bitter resin hangs beneath the hammer-clang of the lower forges. Soldiers drill beside temple acolytes, jurists carry heated brands, and messengers hurry between terraces while the trench below mutters like something trying to wake.”

Geography
Culture
The city teaches that obedience is a form of courage, but its people quietly distinguish between duty and surrender. Strength matters, yet strength must be witnessed and accounted for. A person who admits fear before acting is respected more than one who boasts. Public shame is severe, especially for lying under oath, though residents tolerate private bribery when it protects a family from conscription or the courts.
Pyre-Hold favors practical spectacle. Furnace choirs sing in layered rhythms that mimic hammer strikes, while shield painters use powdered Star-Sand to create images visible only under firelight. Temple dramas recount the judgments of Ignis Kaelen, usually ending with a guilty noble kneeling beside a glowing grate. Soldiers gamble on ash-races, in which tiny brass constructs crawl across heated channels toward a cup of water.
History
Government
The sacred trial stones are giving contradictory results. High Prelate Kaelen Vance has ordered the courts to continue operating, fearing that admitting the flaw would collapse military discipline and invite interference from the ancient red dragon Ignis Kaelen. Several recent verdicts may therefore be legally valid but magically false.
Someone is issuing authentic military orders that redirect patrols away from damaged trench gates. Kaelen Vance suspects the Basalt Ledger, while the Ledger suspects a faction within the Ember Cohorts. The leader’s flaw is prideful secrecy. He keeps evidence from his allies, causing each faction to build its own incomplete conspiracy.
Economy
Clean water is scarce during refinery surges, and untainted food commands high prices. The city also lacks trustworthy scribes. Several archive fires and falsified orders have made written records suspect, forcing officials to rely on witnessed seals, spoken testimony, and magically verified oaths.
Defenses
The Ember Cohorts are six permanent Wyrm-Guard formations stationed across the terraces. Each cohort combines dragonborn infantry, kobold sappers, half-dragon officers, and trained beasts suited to heat. Their discipline is impressive, their loyalty uneven. Most soldiers obey the chain of command, though veteran sergeants increasingly follow personal oath-bonds when official orders conflict with what they see in the refineries.
Law & Order
- crime Level
- Moderate, concentrated in the lower terraces. Theft, bribery, and forged travel writs are common, while open violence is quickly suppressed.
- enforcement
- Temple adjudicators handle civil disputes, Wyrm-Guard patrols handle violence and military crimes, and licensed heat-readers examine evidence in serious cases. Enforcement is efficient when orders are clear and dangerously arbitrary when officers invoke emergency authority.
- typical Punishment
- Fines, confiscation, public labor, branding, or temporary conscription into trench maintenance. Serious sabotage brings imprisonment in the cooled vaults or execution by exposure beside an active vent.
