Qaryat al-Qanat
Qaryat al-Qanat sprawls where the managed canals of the Crown Oasis dissolve into reed-choked wetlands. Homes stand on timber stilts above dark water, while raised earthen roads lead toward the Patrol Bastion and the iron-faced Sluice-Gate Control House. Rice paddies shine between woven reed walls. Skiffs move constantly through narrow channels, carrying grain, gossip, patrol officers, and cargo that never appears on an official manifest.
Qaryat al-Qanat
Where every harvest depends on a gate, and every gate has a keeper.
“Qaryat al-Qanat smells of wet earth, crushed reeds, cooking oil, and canal mud warmed beneath a white sun. Water taps against stilts under every conversation. At dusk, wardens' lanterns slide across black channels while frogs pulse from the paddies and bronze sluice chains groan in the distance. Everyone watches the water level, because a raised gate can save three districts or drown them before the next bell.”

Geography
Culture
The village believes water remembers every hand that touches it. Hoarding water, falsifying a measure, or damaging a sluice is treated as both theft and sacrilege. Hospitality is expected, but strangers are quietly counted, questioned, and watched. People respect competence more than rank. A laborer who can read a flood channel commands greater practical authority than a magistrate who has never stood waist-deep in a breached paddy.
Qaryat al-Qanat favors practical art. Reed screens are woven with family patterns, boat prows are painted in bright mineral pigments, and children compete to carve the fastest floating toy. Evenings bring canal songs accompanied by hand drums, clay rattles, and water jars struck with sticks. Storytellers perform from moving skiffs, circling a crowd while listeners toss copper pieces into the boat if a tale earns their trust.
History
Government
Prefect Samira Dastan is hiding that the southern gate foundations are shifting. If the truth becomes public, grain contracts collapse and the village may be placed under direct military rule.
The Reed Knives have bribed enough patrol crews to receive advance warning of inspections. Samira wants arrests, but every raid risks exposing how many wardens depend on smuggling income.
A dispute over irrigation priority has turned three farming families against the Grain Factors. If the next harvest fails, the families intend to damage the control house rather than accept another contract.
Economy
Dry timber, reliable metalwork, and trustworthy officials are scarce. During flood season, clean drinking water becomes difficult to separate from irrigation flow. The village also lacks enough trained engineers to maintain the sluice machinery without outside help.
Defenses
The Canal Wardens are a mixed force of local boat crews, Crown Oasis patrol officers, and a few Imperial border guards. They specialize in inspections, pursuit, and flood response rather than pitched battle. Their skiffs carry hooked poles, crossbows, lanterns, and weighted nets. They are brave when defending homes, but their chain of command fractures whenever a lawful order threatens a powerful family.
Law & Order
- crime Level
- Moderate and highly organized. Theft, cargo fraud, bribery, and illegal night travel are common, while open violence is unusual unless a patrol boat is involved.
- enforcement
- The Canal Wardens inspect boats, seize contraband, and investigate crimes from skiffs. Enforcement is strongest near the bastion and weakest in the outer paddies. Local families often settle disputes privately before officials hear about them.
- typical Punishment
- Fines in silver pieces, confiscation of boats or cargo, temporary labor repairing canals, and imprisonment in the Patrol Bastion. Serious sabotage brings transfer to Virdal for trial.
