Iron-Gorge Keep
Iron-Gorge Keep exists because the only dependable road between Azimut's eastern workshops and the western approaches to the Draknaar Theocracy cuts through a narrow maze of rust-colored canyons. The settlement was built around a defensible bridge and expanded downward into the rock. Its official purpose is protection and trade control. Its practical purpose is deciding who may carry tools, messages, weapons, and people across the border.
Iron-Gorge Keep
Where every wagon is searched twice, and the canyon keeps the third record.
“Iron-Gorge Keep smells of hot dust, lamp oil, and iron filings. Arc-lights burn blue-white along the battlements, throwing hard shadows across red stone while caravan bells clatter below. Every gatehouse contains a weighing room, a customs desk, and a murder-hole. The town feels prosperous only from a distance. Up close, guards watch merchants, merchants watch guards, and everyone listens for the next horn from the Theocracy road.”

Geography
Culture
The Keep prizes competence, documentation, and keeping promises made before witnesses. Residents distrust grand ideals unless those ideals survive a supply shortage or a border inspection. Rock gnomes dominate engineering and fortification work, Forest gnomes tend gardens, clinics, and messenger services, and specialized trade guards form a respected class whose loyalty is expected to belong to the checkpoint before any distant authority.
Iron-Gorge favors practical entertainments. Gnomish illusionists stage tiny moving dramas inside brass lanterns, while trade guards compete in nonlethal shield bouts. The most popular songs are route ballads that name every well, ambush site, and reliable inn between Azimut and Draknaar. Storytellers earn better crowds when they include a recent customs scandal, especially if the scandal embarrassed a superior.
History
Government
The eastern arc-light pylons are failing in a pattern that suggests deliberate sabotage. Voss wants the issue contained before Azimut recalls him, while Captain Mara Quill insists the damage points to an infiltrator inside the Guard.
A Draknaarian delegation demands the release of detained merchants, claiming the arrests violate an old border compact. The Brass Ledger Compact wants the prisoners held, while the Unbarred Hand plans to break them out.
Economy
Fresh water, fodder, and unregistered replacement parts are scarce. A merchant can buy almost any tool in Iron-Gorge Keep, but may wait days for the paperwork that permits it to leave.
Defenses
The Red Rampart Guard combines veteran caravan escorts, engineers, scouts, and customs enforcers. Its officers are trained to delay an invading force until Azimut can respond, not to win a prolonged field battle. The Guard also controls all legal movement through the eastern checkpoint.
Law & Order
- crime Level
- Moderate. Theft, forgery, and smuggling are common, while open violence is rare because the Guard responds quickly and harshly.
- enforcement
- The Red Rampart Guard patrols the gates and main streets. Customs clerks maintain written evidence, though forged permits and altered cargo manifests are an expanding problem. The town has no independent judiciary, so appeals go to Prefect Voss or an Azimutian magistrate months away.
- typical Punishment
- Fines of 5 to 100 GP, confiscation of goods, temporary detention, forced labor repairing public works, or expulsion through the western gate. Espionage charges can lead to indefinite imprisonment below the Keep.
