Kald Veyr
Gastly's Lair is a ruined palace constructed inside the hollow core of a mountain. Its towers are broken open to the sky, its halls descend instead of extending outward, and its throne room overlooks a bottomless gulf of white fog. Ancient mirrors line nearly every surviving wall. Each reflection shows the viewer standing alone in a dead kingdom. The deepest chamber contains Gastly's hoard and a sealed passage toward Scalenovia's lost capital.
Kald Veyr
A palace inside a mountain where every mirror remembers a kingdom that died alone.
“Every chamber feels staged for an audience that never arrives. Pale fog pours through cracks in the hollow mountain, carrying distant footfalls, whispered names, and the sound of applause from somewhere below. Gastly is never quite where it seems to be. Its voice may come from a mirror, a shaft, or the darkness behind a visitor. The ruin is quiet until someone lies.”

Geography
Culture
Privacy is considered temporary property. Gastly believes every secret belongs in the world eventually, though it prefers deciding when and how the revelation happens. Honest fear earns respect. Empty bravado earns elaborate humiliation. The spirits of the palace have adopted this ethic unevenly, protecting some truths fiercely while treating others as amusing decorations.
Gastly treats revelation as theater. It arranges mirrors into galleries, rehearses entrances through fog, and collects the final words of the dead as dramatic monologues. The palace's lesser spirits imitate these habits, staging silent court scenes for anyone who watches. A visitor who offers a good secret may receive an improvised performance in return, while anyone who gives a dull answer is made part of the scenery.
History
Government
The sealed passage has begun opening from the inside. Warm air, unfamiliar voices, and flakes of black stone are entering the deepest chamber, but Gastly refuses to admit that it cannot reseal the door.
Several mirrors now show the same dead kingdom, including a crowned figure who appears to recognize Gastly. The Glass Retinue wants the mirrors preserved, while the Unsealing Choir wants them shattered.
A relic has vanished from the hoard without any visible breach. Gastly suspects the palace itself has stolen it, and has begun accusing every spirit in turn.
Economy
The lair has no food supply, reliable warmth, or safe sleeping place for ordinary travelers. Fresh water gathers in a cracked ceremonial basin, but it tastes of iron and sometimes contains a voice speaking from far away.
Defenses
Gastly alone is the garrison. Its spectral vapor can animate abandoned armor, palace curtains, broken statues, and the reflections trapped in the mirrors. These servants are dangerous only while Gastly maintains the performance that gives them purpose.
Law & Order
- crime Level
- Low in ordinary terms, extreme in matters involving secrets, mirrors, and the hoard. There are few inhabitants, but every theft becomes a personal trial staged by Gastly.
- enforcement
- Gastly investigates through reflected duplicates, disembodied questions, and sudden appearances in the fog. The Glass Retinue carries out punishments when Gastly wants to remain unseen.
- typical Punishment
- The guilty party is trapped in a mirror and forced to watch a version of the palace where everyone else has forgotten them. Gastly may release them after a confession, a service, or a secret it considers valuable.
