Rattlecross
Rattlecross grew where three old roads meet around a sink of warm stone. The ground was stable enough for wagons, the surrounding springs gave animals water, and the underground heat kept winter caravans moving. The Roarhouse was built over the sink generations later, first as a dragon nesting hall and then as an arena. Its courses now draw competitors, gamblers, merchants, and tribute collectors from every direction.
Rattlecross
At the crossroads, every roar draws a crowd, and every crowd helps keep something underneath asleep.
“Rattlecross is loud enough to make sleep a local superstition. Wagon wheels knock over the paving stones, brass horns call the next bout, and dragons growl beneath the enormous Roarhouse dome. Kobolds sell painted scales beside lizardfolk spice merchants, while travelers pause at the crossroads to watch bloodsport, wager on hatchlings, or petition Terrek's collectors. Everyone knows the arena is profitable. Fewer people know exactly what it is keeping quiet.”

Geography
Culture
The local virtue is nerve displayed in public. A person may be poor, dishonest, or unpleasant, but cowardice before a crowd is remembered for generations. Locals also believe that every bargain has a witness, even if the witness is only a dragon watching from above. Hospitality is offered freely until someone insults the arena, Terrek, or a guest's bloodline.
Rattlecross prizes spectacle over refinement. Dragon handlers choreograph flights through smoke rings, kobold percussionists perform from suspended platforms, and lizardfolk storytellers recite famous bouts with deliberate exaggeration. Children trade carved tokens showing claws, horns, or wings. The most respected performers are not necessarily the strongest combatants, but those who can make a dragon look magnificent without getting eaten.
History
Government
The council's accounts no longer match the sums collected by Terrek's office. Miharu Kest knows the shortage is large enough to invite military intervention, but she keeps delaying an audit because the missing money is tied to the arena's hidden tunnels.
A sealed lower course has begun producing tremors, heat, and deep rhythmic breathing. The Low Choir wants more dangerous spectacles to restore the ritual, while the Scale-Breakers want the arena closed immediately.
Economy
Fresh timber is scarce because the nearby roads have been stripped for construction and firewood. Clean drinking water becomes expensive during festival weeks, when visiting beasts and crowds overwhelm the springs.
Defenses
A mixed force of arena wardens, caravan outriders, and lizardfolk spear companies. They specialize in crowd control, creature containment, and protecting the crossroads rather than field battles.
Law & Order
- crime Level
- Moderate, rising sharply around contract fraud, illegal creature trading, and theft from tribute wagons. Violent crime is uncommon in daylight but frequent beneath the arena during festival nights.
- enforcement
- The Drum Guard patrols roads and public spaces, while arena wardens enforce contracts inside the Roarhouse. Terrek's collectors use informants, seized goods, and public examples rather than open trials.
- typical Punishment
- Fines, forced labor repairing arena courses, or temporary service in the Drum Guard. Serious offenses bring binding contracts, exile from the crossroads, or assignment to an arena bout with no right to refuse.
