Kaelen's Watch
Kaelen's Watch is an early-warning station and patrol base built atop a high rocky ridge where the Gild-Way Frontier Barrens narrow between gravel plains and ancient dry channels. Its position makes it viable because the ridge overlooks the safest pass, catches cooler night winds, and contains a natural shelf for a deep cistern. The station guards trade, tracks elemental beasts, and watches for incursions from the southern wastes.
Kaelen's Watch
A ridge-top garrison where every flash of brass may save a caravan, mislead a patrol, or open the southern road.
“Kaelen's Watch squats on a wind-scoured ridge above the Gild-Way Frontier Barrens, its brass mirrors flashing through heat haze while dust rasps against shutters and leather gear. Water is counted aloud, patrol bells mark every shift, and the smell of lamp oil clings to the barracks. The station feels disciplined until dusk, when several sentries quietly watch the southern trail instead of the official road.”

Geography
Culture
The station prizes readiness, restraint, and the belief that every warning buys someone else another day to live. Rank matters during alarms, but competence outranks birth in ordinary disputes. Residents distrust grand speeches, traveling merchants, and anyone who wastes water. The unofficial virtue is discretion. Everyone knows that survival sometimes depends on deciding which truth must reach the mirrors and which truth must wait.
Residents favor practical songs, painted signal flags, dice games, and competitive tales of patrol mistakes. The mess hall keeps a wall of carved tally marks recording every creature, raider, and traveler sighted from the ridge. Veterans perform the Watcher's Measure, a stamping dance used to teach new recruits the rhythm of warning bells. Outsiders are invited to join, then expected to share one useful piece of news.
History
Government
Several patrol reports have been altered after being written, causing nearby garrisons to miss raids and allowing smugglers to cross the southern trail.
The main cistern is losing water through a concealed crack, but repairing it requires opening the sealed lower chamber where old military records are stored.
Economy
Water is the defining scarcity. A failed pump, fouled cistern, or delayed convoy can force rationing within two days. Fresh fruit, quality paper, and skilled spellcasters are also rare, while ammunition is carefully inventoried after every patrol.
Defenses
A mixed frontier garrison of soldiers, scouts, outriders, engineers, and support staff trained for desert patrols, caravan escort, and signal warfare.
Law & Order
- crime Level
- Moderate, concentrated around supply theft, forged travel papers, smuggling, and interference with signal equipment.
- enforcement
- Military patrols, rotating watch officers, and a small inquiry desk led by the station's senior clerk. Justice is swift during emergencies but compromised by command secrecy.
- typical Punishment
- Confiscation, repayment in labor, confinement in the stone holding room, or expulsion into the Barrens. Serious sabotage can result in a military tribunal and execution, though Captain Merrow avoids that sentence unless absolutely unavoidable.
