Sand-Gate Garrison
Sand-Gate Garrison stands on a black basalt promontory where the southern Gild-Way meets the shifting desert of the Frontier Barrens. Its walls command the only reliable approach for several days in every direction, making the fortress both customs house and shield for the Sultanate of Verulana. The settlement exists because the promontory contains a deep natural aquifer, though that water source is older and stranger than official records admit.
Sand-Gate Garrison
Where the Gild-Way meets the desert, every drop of water carries a receipt.
“Sand-Gate is all glare, brass, and disciplined thirst. Sunlight flashes from signal mirrors while grit rasps between the fortress stones and dry wind moans through arrow slits. Every arrival is counted, searched, taxed, and watched by soldiers who know the desert can kill more quietly than any raider. Beneath the ordered courtyards, cool water sweats from ancient masonry, and something below the cisterns has begun answering the bells.”

Geography
Culture
The garrison values endurance, paperwork, and controlled generosity. A stranger receives water before questions, but never without a measured record of the amount. Officers speak of duty while enlisted soldiers speak of survival. Residents believe every promise should be witnessed, every weapon maintained, and every secret kept until revealing it does more good than harm.
Sand-Gate favors practical entertainments. Soldiers compete in timed wall climbs, drovers trade exaggerated stories over spiced tea, and Verulani musicians play reed flutes beneath the signal towers. The most respected performers are mirror-callers, trained to send coded flashes across the Barrens. Their songs often conceal military warnings, smuggling notices, or private insults aimed at officers who cannot safely answer in public.
History
Government
The lower cistern levels are heating, and the stored water has developed a bitter mineral taste. Commander Samira Holt is suppressing reports while Master Hadrik Pell insists the sealed breach must be addressed immediately.
Cargo assessments are being altered after inspection, causing merchants to pay duties on goods they never carried. Nessa Vale has evidence implicating a senior customs clerk, but releasing it could trigger a trade stoppage.
The Mirrorway Portal Gate has begun opening for a heartbeat after midnight, showing a landscape of red stone and underground lightning. Several sentries have vanished after reporting what they saw.
Economy
Water remains the settlement's defining scarcity. The Deep Cistern Vaults provide enough for the garrison under normal conditions, but recent pressure changes have made the reserves taste metallic and caused several lower chambers to warm unexpectedly. Mounts, laborers, and unauthorized travelers receive the first cuts when officers fear a prolonged siege.
Defenses
The 180-person Southern Terminus Cohort combines Verulani infantry, imperial engineers, mounted outriders, and trained signalers. Its soldiers are competent in desert warfare and checkpoint procedure, but divided loyalties make joint command brittle. Captain Elian Marr keeps the cohort moving through relentless drills while quietly investigating why veteran troops have begun hearing voices beneath the cisterns.
Law & Order
- crime Level
- Moderate, concentrated in customs fraud, smuggling, forged travel papers, theft from water stores, and occasional desert murder. Violent crime inside the walls is uncommon but rarely accidental.
- enforcement
- Soldiers patrol the Outworks and gate approaches, while customs clerks and hired witnesses monitor the Tariff Clearing Floor. Commander Samira Holt permits harsh searches during shortages. Captain Elian Marr uses informants among drovers and support staff, making the law effective but deeply resented.
- typical Punishment
- Confiscation, repayment of triple the stolen value, public labor on the walls, or detention in the dry cells. Serious sabotage brings military trial and possible execution, though prisoners connected to influential caravan houses sometimes disappear into private custody.
