Crown's Plenty
Crown's Plenty is a crossroads town wrapped around the base of Castle Plenty, a broad, square fortress built where three old roads meet. The settlement exists because merchants must pass beneath the castle's shadow to reach the safest bridge, the only reliable ford, and the mountain road. Every quarter serves a different road, and each quarter insists it is the real town.
Crown's Plenty
Three roads meet beneath the castle, and every one of them carries a different version of the truth.
“Crown's Plenty sits beneath a castle that was built to command three roads and now commands almost nothing. Wagons crowd its lanes, soldiers drink beside smugglers, and every public notice bears the castle seal, even when the castellan has not read it. The town feels prosperous from a distance. Up close, its prosperity is mostly movement, debt, and people waiting for someone stronger to make the first mistake.”

Geography
Culture
People here praise self-reliance, but they trust anyone who can name three alternate routes out of town. Hospitality is sincere until politics enters the room. A local saying, "Never owe one road," means keep several patrons, several escape plans, and at least one secret that belongs to nobody powerful.
Crown's Plenty favors practical performances: ballads that remember old betrayals, puppet shows mocking officers, and competitive storytelling where a performer wins by making a known local scandal sound heroic. Castle veterans pay for solemn war songs, while travelers prefer comic plays about toll collectors. The town's best musicians perform in courtyards because the castle has claimed the only proper stage for official ceremonies.
History
Government
Castellan Odrik Plentyward is quietly revoking the old toll charter one clause at a time. If the merchants notice the full pattern, they will close the roads and possibly arm the watch.
A sealed chamber beneath the castle contains records proving the original settlement was founded by deserters who abandoned the army during the first siege. Odrik fears public shame, while the town moot would use the records to challenge his family's claim.
Economy
Grain becomes scarce whenever the castle requisitions more than its written share. Lamp oil is also tightly controlled because smugglers use darkness along the western wall.
Defenses
The Garrison of Open Gates is a disciplined force on parade and an exhausted collection of veterans, recruits, and paid auxiliaries in practice. Its officers fear a siege less than a town revolt.
Law & Order
- crime Level
- Moderate, with theft, smuggling, forged travel papers, and occasional violence between road crews. Murder is rare because every faction fears investigation.
- enforcement
- The town watch handles ordinary crime, castle soldiers handle threats to the garrison, and merchant captains enforce their own rules in the caravan quarter. Jurisdiction is deliberately confusing and often bought.
- typical Punishment
- Fines, seizure of animals or wagons, public labor on the walls, and short imprisonment in the castle cells. Serious offenders may be sent to the provincial capital, though influential criminals often vanish into military service.
