The Lantern Works
The Lantern Works is a fortified forward headquarters built inside a ruined industrial factory complex on the open plains. The Illuminated Legion has rebuilt the structure into a command post, officers' residence, arsenal, and shelter for visiting dignitaries. A disciplined ring of canvas tents surrounds the core, arranged by unit and function. There is no civilian population. Every person present serves the war effort, supports the garrison, or has been invited for political reasons.
The Lantern Works
A rebuilt factory headquarters where every repaired wall hides an older order.
“Ash-grey daylight lies flat across the frost and cinders. Orders travel by shouted relay, signal lamp, and runner because the old factory's communications tower is unreliable. Soldiers keep their helmets close, even indoors. The rebuilt walls look practical rather than glorious, with fresh welds crossing old shell scars. Beneath the secondary void shield's faint dome shimmer, everyone behaves as though the next bombardment has already begun.”

Geography
Culture
The Legion teaches that obedience is not virtue unless it follows revealed truth. Every order is copied, read aloud, and marked with a witness's name. This creates an outward culture of precision, but also endless arguments over interpretation. Rank grants authority in battle, while spiritual illumination grants the right to question rank. The result is a disciplined headquarters where nearly everyone believes someone above them is dangerously misguided.
The garrison distrusts leisure that cannot be justified as useful. Soldiers practice marching songs, repair damaged banners, and stage brief tactical dramas in the mess hall. Officers sponsor illumination displays that project sacred diagrams onto the factory walls. Sergeant Elian Voss organizes knife games after midnight, while Sister Maud Renn objects that the wagers conceal coded messages. Visitors are expected to praise discipline, regardless of what they see.
History
Government
Marshal-Curator Oren Vale has based the fortress's defense plan on an old factory evacuation map that may be inaccurate. He refuses to admit uncertainty because his authority depends on appearing to possess divine clarity. Recent tremors have opened passages beneath the assembly floor, and enemy scouts may already be using them. If Vale changes the plan publicly, the Penitent Spears will call it proof of spiritual failure.
The Scriptorium has discovered that casualty figures were altered after the Legion seized the factory. If the missing names are restored, several current officers could be implicated in the massacre that made the headquarters possible. Sister Maud Renn wants the truth recorded, while Marshal-Curator Oren Vale wants the documents sealed until after the siege. The Penitent Spears are preparing to seize the archive by force.
Economy
Food is adequate for two weeks, ammunition for less than one major assault, and clean water depends on a vulnerable condenser line. Paper, lamp oil, and skilled mechanics are also scarce. The Legion maintains a strict requisition system, paying in gold pieces only for services that cannot be compelled. This has made the quartermaster powerful and encouraged officers to hide private reserves.
Defenses
The Ashen Column numbers roughly one hundred and twenty soldiers, technicians, medics, scouts, and attendants. It is not a conventional regiment. Every member has sworn the Illuminated Legion's private oaths, and many have served under several commanders during the siege. The Column's strength lies in its cohesion and improvisation. Its weakness is that nearly every veteran has a rival inside the chain of command.
Law & Order
- crime Level
- Low in public spaces, high behind locked doors. Theft, sabotage, unauthorized correspondence, and doctrinal disputes are common, but ordinary violence is tightly controlled.
- enforcement
- The Ashen Column enforces military law through patrols, checkpoint inspections, curfew sweeps, and sudden loyalty hearings. Sister Maud Renn's clerks investigate written testimony, while Sergeant Elian Voss handles practical security. Their methods conflict, which lets clever offenders exploit delays between formal judgment and immediate punishment.
- typical Punishment
- Confiscation of equipment, loss of rations, public censure, labor in the repair yards, or confinement in the old furnace cells. Treason and deliberate sabotage are punished by execution, though the Command Circle sometimes delays judgment when the accused knows something valuable.
