Weapons1

A balanced iron hook with a wooden grip, commonly used to snag cargo, rope, or an unwary sleeve.

Miscellaneous11

A dependable tallow candle favored by dockworkers, sailors, and night watchmen.

Provides bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for another 20 feet.

Clear whale or fish oil in a stoppered ceramic flask, suitable for lamps, fire-starting, and unpleasant maritime chores.

A burning flask of oil deals 5 fire damage when ignited on a creature, plus 5 fire damage at the end of its next turn if the oil remains.

A compact set of iron spikes and cord for securing cargo, bracing doors, or climbing rough masonry.

A tarred leather water skin designed for long voyages and rough handling.

Resistant to ordinary seawater and remains buoyant when sealed.

Stout hemp rope treated with wax and fish oil to slow rot in damp weather.

A brass-framed hooded lantern with sliding shutters and a thick glass lens.

Provides bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for another 30 feet.

A sailor's signal mirror, polished well enough to catch sunlight even through harbor haze.

Useful for signaling, checking corners, or examining areas without exposing the face.

A custom blend of saltpeter, powdered shell, and black soot sold to trusted sailors for emergency signaling.

When thrown onto a flame, the powder produces a sudden flash and thick smoke in a 5-foot radius until the start of the thrower's next turn. Creatures in the area have disadvantage on their next Perception check relying on sight.

A soft gray sealing wax mixed with lampblack and rendered fat, made for moving quietly through cramped shipboard spaces.

Applied to a door, chest, or small container, the wax dulls ordinary hinge squeaks and latch clicks for 1 hour. It does not defeat magical alarms.

A foul-smelling sailor's salve used to slip free from wet knots and tight restraints.

A creature coated in the grease has advantage on checks made to escape nonmagical rope or manacles, but disadvantage on checks made to climb or maintain a firm grip.

A legal hunting poison in some ports and a contraband substance in others, carefully labeled and sold only after questions are answered.

Coats one weapon or up to three pieces of ammunition. The next hit deals an extra poison damage. The coating loses potency after 1 minute.
Potions1

A canonical potion of healing, brewed from kelp extract and common restorative herbs. Its red color deepens when shaken.

None beyond its healing effect.

Where The Take Sits

The shop's narrow front room holds the visible cash and ordinary stock, while a cramped sleeping loft and a false-backed shelf conceal the more valuable items. The ceiling-high shelving creates blind corners, but every movement near the counter can be heard by anyone in the loft.

Security Check

Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) with thieves' tools, followed by Dexterity (Stealth)
DC 15

On Failure

A failed theft attempt causes a rack of hanging lanterns to crash and sets off the contraband bell. Kest Grom locks the front door, shouts for the harbor watch, and uses the crowded shelves as cover while directing customers or apprentices to block the exits. If the party fails by 5 or more, a leaking oil cask catches fire, creating immediate danger and forcing a Dexterity saving throw or fire damage to creatures in the cramped aisle.

Shop Atmosphere

The Lamp and Hook takes its name from the trade that built the settlement's oldest quay: lamps for night loading and iron hooks for moving cargo. The shop is narrow enough that two armored customers cannot comfortably pass each other. Every shelf is packed with candles, lamp oil, rope, wicks, hooks, tar, pitch, lantern glass, signal flags, and maritime odds and ends. A bell over the door rings whenever someone carrying contraband enters, but it does not identify the contraband or distinguish stolen goods from restricted cargo. Kest Grom has learned to listen for the bell's particular tone and quietly watches the visitor's hands before deciding whether to greet them warmly or reach for the alarm cord. The back wall contains a concealed shelf of questionable but not openly murderous goods, including diluted venom and flash powder. The shopkeeper's name comes from an obsolete dockside trade, grommet-setting, once used to reinforce sail eyes before the harbor adopted newer rigging methods.
