Shop Atmosphere
“The shop is called The Crooked Kettle, a squat little storefront grown around the hollow of an ancient tree. Its walls are woven from living roots, painted shutters, and mismatched boards gathered from forgotten groves. Shelves lean at cheerful angles beneath hanging bundles of herbs, seed pods, shed feathers, beetle shells, and corked bottles that glow, bubble, or occasionally sneeze. A brass kettle over the central workbench constantly produces a thin ribbon of fragrant green steam, and the floorboards creak in different pitches depending on the weather. The shopkeeper, Maribel Bramblehoof, is a charismatic cervan alchemist from southern Humblewood. She is quick-witted, warm-hearted, and gloriously chaotic, with russet fur, a pair of carefully polished antlers, and a patched green coat crowded with pockets. Maribel labels nearly everything, but her labels often contradict one another. She greets customers with theatrical confidence, then searches three shelves and her own sleeves for the item they requested. Despite her disorder, she is a skilled brewer who refuses to sell deliberately cruel poisons, unstable explosives to careless customers, or anything gathered from a living creature without need. She offers a small discount to travelers who bring her clean samples of unusual plants, sheds, harmless venom, or rumors about forgotten groves. Her greatest weakness is curiosity. A clever adventurer can distract her with a rare ingredient, an unfamiliar recipe, or a dramatic account of an alchemical mishap.”
