Shop Atmosphere
“Gravel-Swept Provisioners was built where a mound of river gravel once blocked the old road, and its floor still crunches faintly beneath the rugs. The shop smells of lamp oil, leather, dried herbs, and rain-damp rope. Shelves lean at slightly different angles, each marked with charcoal symbols rather than written labels. Baatu, a broad-shouldered human with a clipped beard and a missing left thumbnail, runs the counter with suspicious efficiency. He remembers every unpaid debt and every unusual purchase, but quietly rounds prices down for caravan guards who bring him useful road news. A brass handbell under the counter is connected to the rear office, and a scarred brindle mastiff sleeps near the flour sacks. The store's name comes from the gravel bank cleared before construction, while Baatu's byname, Dry-Cut, refers to the drained ditch that became the first foundation trench.”
