Baat will accept useful repair labor from crews short on coin, but he writes the work and its agreed value on his slate before handing over goods. He raises rope and pitch prices when storms delay ships, then lowers them when a new cargo finally reaches the cove. A few overland supplies appear from his discreet dealings with the Open Trail Company, much to the irritation of some local merchants. The shop is so tight that a shifting coil can brush a customer’s shoulder, and the brass fittings overhead give a soft, betraying tick whenever someone bumps the counter.

The shop’s modest cash and personal effects are spread between the counter, a shallow drawer, and a crowded rear shelf. The slate of outstanding orders stays close to Baat, who works within earshot of the cramped storefront and the street outside.

If they fail: If the attempt fails, a floorboard creaks and Baat calls out from the front room. He gives the intruder a chance to explain, but a second suspicious move brings the nearby dock crews running. A witnessed theft earns the culprit a damaged reputation among Screech Cove’s repair crews and may mean repayment in labor or coin.
