The Ashen Veyr are the monstrous guardians, scavengers, spies, and memory-keepers of the oldest cities. They move across walls as easily as streets, know which doors are safe to knock upon, and can sense the grief soaked into ancient stone. Their clans rule no kingdom, yet entire neighborhoods survive because a Veyr family has decided that the people within it are under their protection. To meet one is to encounter a creature that may be a beloved civic guardian, a feared rooftop predator, or both at once.
Physical Description
Ashen Veyr are imposing beast-folk with the lean, powerful frames of creatures built for climbing and sudden violence. Their faces combine avian and feline qualities, with hooked noses, broad cheekbones, slit-pupiled eyes, and expressive ears that taper into small mineral points. Most have dense fur in shades of charcoal, rust, bone, or storm gray, often marked by pale rings around the throat and wrists. Short horns, stone ridges, or obsidian plates grow along the brow, shoulders, and spine. Their hands and feet end in dark, retractable talons suited to brick, timber, and old masonry. A Veyr’s voice carries a faint layered resonance, as though another speaker were repeating the words from inside a distant tunnel.
Society & Culture
Veyr society is organized through overlapping clans, neighborhood oaths, trade circles, and remembrance houses. A person may belong to a birth clan, an adopted district, and a professional fellowship, with each relationship carrying different duties. Their most important social practice is the keeping of witness, in which an event is memorized by several people and preserved in song, carving, or ritual retelling. Hospitality is extended through protected thresholds. Once a guest crosses a marked doorway, the household must offer shelter, warning, or honest directions. Veyr disputes are often settled by public testimony, endurance contests, or the exchange of repaired objects that symbolize the damage done.
Religion & Alignment
Veyr spirituality centers on the belief that cities possess a collective memory. Ancestors are honored through carved stones, repeated names, neighborhood maintenance, and the careful preservation of promises. Some worship gods of thresholds, burial, craft, storms, or knowledge, while others revere the nameless spirit believed to sleep beneath every ancient foundation. Veyr traditions encourage loyalty, vigilance, and reciprocal protection. Many are neutral or lawful in outlook, but individuals may become fiercely rebellious when laws are used to abandon the vulnerable.
Homelands & Architecture
Veyr districts occupy the vertical spaces of a city. Their homes cling to towers, bridge undersides, bell structures, abandoned aqueducts, and fortified tenements. Doorways are narrow at the base and broad above, encouraging climbing visitors to enter by wall or ceiling. Family shrines are built from black stone, roof gutters carry scented water, and every major avenue contains a public refuge where travelers may sleep under clan protection. Veyr architecture favors durable arches, hidden escape routes, roof gardens, and windows positioned to watch several streets at once.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Other city-dwellers often regard the Veyr with a mixture of gratitude and fear. Merchants appreciate their protection, criminals dread their knowledge of hidden routes, and officials resent their informal authority. Veyr are especially wary of aristocrats, prison authorities, and anyone who treats neighborhoods as property rather than communities. They often form close friendships with displaced peoples, street children, laborers, and other outsiders. Their trust is difficult to earn but exceptionally durable once given.
