Across the grasslands travel the Stormmanes, monstrous riders and hunters who measure a life by the distance it carries its promises. They can outrun cavalry, break a shield wall, and read the mood of a storm from the taste of the air. Yet their greatest strength is not violence. It is memory. Every Stormmane carries a map of the world in songs, scars, and stories, and every journey is an argument with the horizon about what must be preserved.
Physical Description
Stormmanes are powerful beast-folk whose bodies combine humanoid hands and expressive faces with the traits of great plains animals. Most possess digitigrade legs ending in broad, durable hooves, though some bloodlines bear clawed feet or padded paws. Their heads may resemble horses, antelope, rhinoceroses, hyenas, bison, or other grassland beasts. All have prominent ears, sharp senses, heavy teeth, and a mane, crest, or bristling ruff that reacts to emotion. Their hides range from tawny gold and red-brown to charcoal, cream, striped gray, and startling blue-black. Horns, tusks, ridged brows, and ritual scars are common signs of age and accomplishment.
Society & Culture
Stormmane society is organized into traveling clans called herds, each led by a council of elders, pathfinders, beast-speakers, and challenge champions. Authority is earned through service, survival, and the ability to remember what others would prefer forgotten. Their laws are preserved in call-and-response chants, making public memory a form of jurisprudence. Hospitality is sacred, but it has limits. A guest may receive food, shelter, and protection, yet a guest who threatens the herd becomes part of the herd's problem. Children are raised communally, and names may change after major deeds, failures, or revelations.
Religion & Alignment
Stormmane spirituality centers on the Open Sky, the First Herd, and the Thunder Below. They do not always agree whether these are gods, ancestral forces, or metaphors, but nearly every clan honors them through dawn observances, storm vigils, and funerary journeys. Their priests read weather, tracks, dreams, and animal behavior. Stormmanes commonly favor neutral, good, or chaotic alignments, valuing freedom and loyalty over abstract law, though disciplined guardians and ruthless war-chiefs are equally possible.
Homelands & Architecture
Stormmane homelands are rarely fixed. Clans travel with immense hide pavilions mounted on wooden frames, while permanent settlements appear around watering holes, sacred stones, and defensible hillocks. Their halls are low and broad, built to resist wind rather than impress visitors. Roofs are layered with woven reeds, dyed leather, and the bones of enormous beasts. Clan markers are painted on standing stones, wagon wheels, shields, and even the flanks of favored animals.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Stormmanes respect people who keep their word and distrust those who hide behind titles, walls, or elaborate promises. They often form close bonds with mounted peoples, nomadic communities, rangers, caravaners, and giant beasts. Settled societies sometimes fear them as raiders, particularly when unfamiliar clans arrive during drought or war. Stormmanes answer prejudice with bluntness, pride, or theatrical generosity, depending on whether they believe the offender can be taught.
