Play an Echo if you wish to embody a living memory or a literal ripple in the fabric of space. These beings are born from the psychic residue of grand historical events, possessing forms that flicker like candlelight and voices that carry the weight of forgotten eras. They are masters of sound and movement who struggle to find their own identity amidst the shadows of what came before.
Physical Description
Echoes appear as semi-translucent humanoids whose outlines seem to vibrate or blur, especially when they are in motion. Their skin is typically a monochromatic shade of silver, charcoal, or pale indigo, and their hair often flows as if underwater. Most striking are their eyes, which lack pupils and instead glow with a soft, steady radiance. When they speak, their voices possess a natural reverb, sounding as though several people are whispering the same words in unison.
Society & Culture
Echo society is organized into groups called 'Crescendos,' which are less about bloodlines and more about shared origins. An Echo born from the fall of a great empire will seek out others of that same 'chord.' They are a deeply archival people, obsessed with recording the present so it may never truly fade. They do not value wealth or territory but instead trade in secrets, songs, and sensory experiences that reinforce their physical presence in the world.
Religion & Alignment
Most Echoes follow deities of history, time, or the afterlife. They view existence as a grand symphony and see themselves as the final, lingering notes. They lean heavily toward Neutrality, acting as impartial observers of the world. Those who lean toward Law seek to preserve the status quo, while Chaotic Echoes try to rewrite the themes of their own existence to escape their origins.
Homelands & Architecture
Their homes are often built in 'Dead Zones' where the barrier between the Material Plane and the Ethereal Plane is thin. Echo architecture is surprisingly delicate: spires made of resonant glass and singing stones that hum when the wind passes through them. These structures are often built into the ruins of the civilizations that gave birth to the Echoes in the first place.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They find the 'Solid Folk,' such as humans and dwarf-like peoples, fascinating for their permanence. They often feel a strange kinship with elf-like ancestries, sharing a similar long-term perspective on time. However, many find Echoes unsettling, as their presence can feel like a haunting, and their tendency to repeat others' words can be mistaken for mockery.
