Once the masters of an advanced civilization on the island of Durinn, the Forge-Kin are now a survivors' culture dwelling in swampy reservations. They are a people of dualities: the wet, cool stillness of the peat bog and the burning, vital heat of the subterranean forge. Despite their subjugation by the Mercian Humans, they are currently undergoing a massive demographic explosion, filling their newly dug tunnels with a generation of youths determined to reclaim their stolen heritage through prayer, craft, and an unyielding connection to the Pulse of the World.
Physical Description
The Durinnian Forge-Kin are stout and broad-shouldered with skin that ranges from the dark, rich brown of dried peat to the grey of weathered granite. Their hair is often thick and dark, typically worn in elaborate braids interwoven with reed fibers or copper wire. Due to their time in the wetlands, many have a slightly damp sheen to their skin and expressive, moss-colored eyes. They often bear ritual scars or copper tattoos on their forearms to mark their service to the Lady and their proficiency in the forges.
Society & Culture
Durinnian society is built on the concept of 'The Ember in the Bog' — maintaining internal fire in a damp world. Life in the reservation has transformed them into a tight-knit, communal people who prioritize the group over the individual. They are currently experiencing a population boom as a strategic choice to eventually overwhelm their oppressors. Children are raised communally in large tunnel-nurseries. Their culture emphasizes the mastery of materials: wood, peat, and metal. Every object created is seen as having a fragment of the 'Gathering Flame' within it, requiring a sacrifice or a promise to the earth to keep the balance of the Lady.
Religion & Alignment
Their faith, known as Durinn Beliefs, centers on Gizaragzda, 'The Lady'. She is the spirit of life that persists in the deep mud and the clear springs. She is the mother of the forges, teaching that every flame is a resurrection of the world's first light. Rites involve quenching heated metal in sacred spring water and offering prayers of reciprocity: 'What we take from the mud, we return in song.' They tend toward Neutral Good or Lawful Neutral alignments, prioritizing communal stability and the slow, patient preparation for the liberation of their people.
Homelands & Architecture
Originally from the lush and mineral-rich island of Durinn, they now inhabit the Mud-Cradles: a series of semi-flooded reservation camps. Their architecture combines surface huts made of woven reeds and peat blocks with extensive, spiraling underground tunnels. These tunnels are ingeniously designed with water-locks and air-ducts to prevent flooding, serving as both hidden homes and training grounds for their eventual return to the surface of Durinn.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They harbor a deep, quiet resentment toward the Mercian Humans who decimated their advanced ancestors and relegated them to the bogs. While they appear compliant to outsiders, they are intensely secretive, hiding their true numbers and their technological progress. They feel a kinship with other displacement-focused peoples and have a respectful, if distant, relationship with subterranean elf-kin or forest-dwelling goblinoids who share their reverence for natural spirits.
