Gravemaw stride into the world like living bulwarks, towering over most folk and carrying the patience of stone beneath their fierce animal features. They are hunters, builders, guardians, and wanderers bound by an old belief: strength has meaning only when it is used to keep others from being crushed by the world. A Gravemaw adventurer may be a clan champion seeking a worthy challenge, an exile determined to earn a new name, or a curious giant of a traveler discovering that not every problem can be solved by lifting it.
Physical Description
Gravemaw are towering beast-folk with dense muscle, heavy bones, and bodies adapted to cold, exertion, and long travel. Their faces combine humanoid structure with features of powerful mammals, most commonly bears, boars, bison, great cats, elk, or wolves. Thick fur, coarse manes, or bristled crests grow along the shoulders, forearms, spine, and jaw. Their hands are broad and dexterous, ending in blunt claws suited for climbing, digging, and gripping weapons. Despite their bulk, they move with surprising quiet when they choose. Their eyes range from amber and umber to pale gray, and their voices often carry a resonant undertone that can make ordinary speech sound like distant thunder.
Society & Culture
Gravemaw society is organized around hearth-clans, each made up of several extended households that share land, obligations, and ancestral stories. Status comes from what one protects, repairs, teaches, or endures. Champions are not merely warriors. They are expected to settle disputes, lead dangerous expeditions, and accept blame when their decisions fail. Hospitality is sacred, but it is not passive. A guest is fed, sheltered, and expected to contribute to the household before departing. Public contests of strength are common, yet the highest praise is reserved for restraint. A Gravemaw who could win a fight but chooses a safer solution is considered stronger than one who simply triumphs.
Religion & Alignment
Gravemaw religion centers on the Hearth Below, a web of ancestral spirits believed to dwell in stone, root, bone, and remembered promises. Each clan honors a particular First Beast, not as a literal deity in every tradition but as an ancestral pattern worthy of imitation. They commonly favor communal and protective outlooks, though wandering champions and oath-breakers can be fiercely individualistic. Their morality is shaped less by abstract law than by reciprocity, responsibility, and the question of who will bear the consequences of an action.
Homelands & Architecture
Their settlements are built to outlast weather and feud alike. Stone halls are sunk partly into hillsides, with thick timber ribs, broad doorways, smoke vents, and raised sleeping platforms. Clan houses often display enormous carved beams depicting ancestors as bears, aurochs, boars, elk, or other revered beasts. Roads are marked by cairns rather than signs, and every important crossing has a shelter stocked with water, salt, and firewood for travelers.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Other peoples often see Gravemaw as intimidating, dependable, or both. They are valued as caravan guards, rescue workers, miners, sailors, and soldiers, but their size can invite suspicion in crowded cities. Gravemaw tend to respect practical competence more than polished manners, and friendships are often sealed through shared labor, honest argument, or surviving danger together. They have a complicated relationship with smaller goblin-kin communities, alternating between protectiveness, rivalry, and old grudges rooted in disputes over caves, food stores, and mountain routes.
