Veilstalkers are slender beast-folk with long limbs, flexible fingers, and faces that combine feline, mustelid, and nocturnal primate features without belonging wholly to any earthly lineage. Their coats range from smoke-gray and blue-black to pearl, rust, and pale green. A faint pattern of luminous lines travels beneath the skin, brightening near portals, dreams, and powerful magic. Their large eyes possess a second translucent lid that protects them from the radiance of open voids. Many have narrow membranes between wrist and torso, useful for slowing a fall but not for true flight. Their tails are expressive, moderately prehensile, and often tipped with a tuft resembling a small flame.

Ancestors are honored as lantern-keepers whose wisdom remains active in dreams. Some clans worship particular stars, forgotten travelers, or personified thresholds. Their traditions favor protective and individualistic behavior, making good and neutral alignments common, though an ambitious Veilstalker may pursue power by monopolizing crossings or hoarding forbidden knowledge.

Veilstalker homelands are built along the inner surfaces of drifting worlds, inside hollow moons, or beneath skies that open into oceans of stars. Their settlements are arranged in spirals around communal lanterns, allowing residents to follow familiar routes even when gravity changes. Buildings use flexible ribs of pale wood, woven mineral fiber, and polished shell. Doors are often circular, not for symbolism but because rectangular thresholds are believed to invite hostile geometry.

Veilstalkers are curious about mortal peoples but wary of permanence. They admire communities that maintain roads, libraries, and hospices, seeing these as forms of sacred wayfinding. They often find large empires unsettling because borders enforced by armies resemble cages. Some cultures welcome Veilstalkers as guides, diviners, or scouts, while others regard them as spies or ill omens.
