The Orogeni are the masters of the vertical frontier. Born in the precarious region known as the Cracked Steps, they view a sheer cliff face not as an obstacle, but as a highway. If you want to play a character who treats gravity as a suggestion and finds comfort in the ancient stability of the stone, the Orogeni offer a unique perspective on survival and balance in a world of heights.
Physical Description
Orogeni possess skin that mimics the geological makeup of their birthplace, ranging from the dusty reds of sandstone to the deep charcoal of basalt. Their skin is unusually tough and textured, appearing like fine-grained stone under close inspection. They have wide, powerful hands with thickened, spade-like fingernails used for grip. Their eyes are large and set slightly further apart than a human's, granting them exceptional depth perception essential for leaping between ledges. Most notably, their hair often incorporates mineral growths, resembling crystalline dust or mossy lichen.
Society & Culture
Society within the Cracked Steps is defined by the Great Balance. Because their homeland is a series of precarious terraces, Orogeni value weight and position above all else. Their culture is semi-nomadic, following the seasonal migration of mountain goats and the blooming of cliff-dwelling flora. They are master stoneworkers, but they rarely build upward, preferring to carve their dwellings into the existing faces of the steps. Music is central to their social life, particularly percussion and throat singing that can echo across wide chasms to communicate between disparate clans.
Religion & Alignment
The Orogeni usually follow the Path of the Unmoving, a philosophy emphasizing stoicism and reliability. They tend toward Neutral alignments, focusing on the preservation of their clans and the geological sanctity of the Steps. They often worship the Spirit of the Foundation, an ancient entity believed to be the sentient core of the world. Those who wander from the Steps sometimes embrace the winds, shifting toward more chaotic outlooks.
Homelands & Architecture
The Orogeni live in the Cracked Steps, a region where the continent has buckled into thousands of jagged, mile-wide stairs. Their architecture is almost entirely subterranean or cliff-side. Buildings are carved directly into the living rock with intricate winch systems and suspension bridges made of woven mountain-grass and silk-vine connecting different levels. Their 'cities' look like series of balconies and windows dotting a vertical mile of stone.
Relationships With Other Peoples
The Orogeni are respected by dwarves for their knowledge of surface-level geology and by mountain-folk for their prowess as guides. They often find the frantic pace of valley-dwelling species exhausting. They maintain a cordial but distant relationship with avian peoples, whom they respect as fellow masters of the heights but occasionally distrust for their 'flimsy' reliance on air rather than stone.
