Play an Oriphelm if you want to manifest sound as shimmering ribbons of light. You are a living prism, a creature born of the deep earth who views the world through the lens of vibration and color, using the harmonies of the universe to defend your allies and dazzle your enemies.
Physical Description
The Oriphelm are humanoids with skin resembling polished, semi-translucent gemstone. Their internal anatomy lacks traditional vocal cords, instead containing a series of hollow, resonating chambers that vibrate to produce sound. Their eyes are faceted like cut diamonds, lacking pupils but glowing with an inner light that shifts hue based on their current mood or the ambient sounds surrounding them. Their movements are rhythmic and precise, often accompanied by a faint, melodic chiming sound that emanates from their joints.
Society & Culture
Oriphelm society is organized into Choirs, which are communal groups that function like extended families and political units. They do not value written history as much as 'vocal murals,' which are collective performances where a Choir recreates historical events through synchronized song and light. They value harmony and resonance above all else, believing that every soul has a unique frequency that must be tuned to the benefit of the collective. Conflict is often resolved through 'the Harmonizing,' a ritual where both parties attempt to find a literal middle-note between their dissenting views.
Religion & Alignment
Most Oriphelm lean toward Lawful alignments, valuing the structured beauty of musical theory and the reliability of geological formations. They often worship deities of Light, Forge, or Knowledge, viewing the creator of the world as a 'Great Composer' who hummed the first atom into existence.
Homelands & Architecture
Their cities are carved into massive geode deposits or built within canyons that have unique acoustic properties. Oriphelm architecture focuses on 'Light-Wells,' which are narrow shafts that catch sunlight and reflect it through massive glass prisms to illuminate subterranean plazas. Their homes are designed to amplify certain frequencies, allowing families to communicate from room to room through simple hums.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They find the 'fleshy' races to be remarkably loud and chaotic, often overwhelmed by the 'visual noise' of a bustling human city. They get along well with dwarf-like cultures due to a shared love of stonework, and they feel a kinship with elf-like people who appreciate the fine arts. They are often wary of goblin-kin, finding their explosive sounds to be physically painful to their sensitive, light-reflective skin.
