Sturdy coastal dwellers with the grit of the open sea, Selachians are shark-like humanoids known for their uncanny intuition and physical resilience. Whether managing a bustling port-side shop or navigating a treacherous reef, they use their electrical senses to detect what others cannot. They are the ultimate survivalists of the surf, bringing a stoic, predator-like focus to every bargain and every battle.
Physical Description
Selachians possess a powerful, muscular build covered in sandpaper-like skin composed of dermal denticles. Their coloration ranges from the slate grey of the open ocean to the vibrant, mottled patterns of tropical reefs. Their eyes are dark and wide, protected by nictitating membranes, and their heads are lined with tiny, sensitive pores called ampullae. A sturdy dorsal fin typically emerges from their upper back, and their hands are webbed but highly dexterous, capable of fine craft and commerce.
Society & Culture
Selachian society is built upon the concept of 'Te Tai', or the Great Flow. They believe that resources, luck, and life itself move in cycles like the tides. This makes them natural merchants and traders who value the fair exchange of goods and information. They are communal but respect individual prowess. In many coastal cities, they act as the bridge between terrestrial kingdoms and undersea enclaves, serving as master navigators and harbor masters who keep the wheels of trade spinning.
Religion & Alignment
Many Selachians revere deities of the ocean, the moon, and commerce. They often lean toward Neutral alignments, valuing the pragmatic balance of the natural world and the fair rules of the market. They are rarely cruel but can seem cold to outsiders due to their directness and lack of expressive facial muscles. Their loyalty is deep, once earned through a fair deal or a shared hardship.
Homelands & Architecture
Their settlements are often amphibious, featuring tiered platforms that rise and fall with the tides. They prefer materials like driftwood, whalebone, and reinforced coral. A Selachian home is often split between a dry upper floor for trading with surface-dwellers and a submerged lower chamber for rest and private family life. Their markets are legendary, often built directly onto the docks of major port cities.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Selachians maintain a respectful but distant relationship with most surface folk. They find humans a bit too chaotic and elves perhaps a bit too airy. They share a deep mutual respect with dwarf-like kin, appreciating their craftsmanship and steady nature. They are often seen as rivals to goblin-kin of the coasts, though many a Selachian shopkeeper has a goblin 'runner' in their employ to handle land-based deliveries.
