Towering warriors of the shifting sands, the Blood-Skull nomads navigate the lethal Desertstone not with sight, but through an ancient, pheromonal understanding of the world. They are the gray ghosts of the dunes, marked by ritual scars and driven by a primal devotion to the gods of the sun and the hunt.
Physical Description
These massive humanoids possess skin the color of weathered flint or dry wood-ash. Their frames are immense, often reaching nine feet in height with shoulders broad enough to fill a palace doorway. Their eyes are a milky, opalescent white, devoid of pupils and largely insensitive to fine detail. To compensate, their nostrils are large and constantly flaring, capable of tasting the air for miles. Their bodies serve as living histories, covered in raised, intricate keloid scars that map their victories and spiritual growth.
Society & Culture
Blood-Skull society is a meritocracy built on survival and sensory prowess. Because they 'see' the world through scent and sound, they lack many of the visual prejudices of other races. They judge others by the strength of their pheromones and the steadiness of their heartbeats. Honor is tracked through the 'Great Red Record'—the system of ritual scarring that covers their skin. A smooth-skinned adult is a person of no standing, whereas a scarred elder is a walking library of tribal history.
Religion & Alignment
They follow the 'Hollow Sun' and the 'Carrion King,' ancient deities of the desert who demand resilience and the culling of the weak. Most Blood-Skulls lean toward Lawful Neutral or Neutral Evil, valuing the strict hierarchy of the tribe and the necessity of the kill above individual whims.
Homelands & Architecture
The Desertstone is a wasteland of high plateaus and singing dunes. The Blood-Skulls build little that is permanent, preferring mobile yurt-tents made from the hides of desert megafauna. When they do build, it is usually underground, carving deep cisterns and meditation chambers into the cool bedrock of the badlands.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They view surface-dwellers as soft and scent-blind. They have a begrudging respect for dwarf-kin who live in the dark and understand the weight of stone. To the Blood-Skull, an elf-like creature smells of too much artifice and strange perfumes, making them untrustworthy. They are often hired as trackers or desert guides, provided the client can stomach their grim rituals.
