Carrying the weight of history in their very marrow, the Scriptmarked are humans whose ancestors underwent alchemical rituals to bond their bloodlines with mystical inks. Every Scriptmarked individual bears natural markings that resemble fine calligraphy or cartographic lines, serving as a living record of their lineage. They are the ultimate witnesses and chroniclers, possessing an uncanny ability to retain information and manipulate the written word as if it were a physical extension of their own bodies.
Physical Description
To a casual observer, a Scriptmarked human looks like any other person, yet closer inspection reveals the Indigo Veins. These are patterns of skin pigmentation that look like masterfully applied tattoos, often swirling in geometric scripts or jagged runes across the neck, hands, and face. Their skin tones range from vellum pale to deep ebony, often with a slight sheen like dried lacquer. Their eyes frequently feature ink-like droplets within the iris, and their sweat can occasionally leave faint, greyish stains on porous materials.
Society & Culture
They are a culture of meticulous record-keepers and lawyers. Scriptmarked society is organized into Houses of Record rather than standard families. Children are raised to appreciate the permanence of a contract and the power of a secret. They believe that if a thing is not written, it never truly happened. This makes them highly valued as diplomats and accountants, though some find their obsession with documentation to be stifling or overly bureaucratic.
Religion & Alignment
Most Scriptmarked lean toward Lawful Neutrality, valuing the structure of law and the preservation of truth above all else. They typically worship deities of knowledge, trade, or craft. They view lies as a form of spiritual corruption, as a lie is a stain upon the record of the world that can never be fully erased.
Homelands & Architecture
Scriptmarked enclaves are found within the largest cosmopolitan cities, usually centered around 'The Great Bindery' which serves as a communal home and library. Their architecture is characterized by tall, thin towers with hundreds of small windows to provide light for reading. The walls are almost always engraved with the history of the building and its inhabitants, turning the very stone into a readable chronicle.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They find the elf-like peoples to be respectably ancient but frustratingly poetic with their records. They often partner with dwarf-like clans to document deep-earth lineages. They are wary of chaotic species who live for the moment, seeing them as 'erasers' who threaten the continuity of history. To a Scriptmarked, a person who leaves no paper trail is a ghost and should not be trusted.
