The Rujin are a sturdy and spiritual people who embody the collision of rugged northern survivalism and refined ancestral honor. Once a unified mountain culture in Arlyurl, many were forced into servitude by the Szithan Empire, though a growing number of freed clans now navigate the world as respected mercenaries, shamans, and builders. With their tusks carved with records of their lineage and their heavy wool-and-silk robes, they represent a culture that finds beauty in the harsh seasonal cycles and the silent voices of the river spirits.
Physical Description
Rujin possess a powerful, burly build characterized by wide shoulders and thick limbs. Their facial features are distinctly boar-like, featuring flat, sensitive snouts and prominent tusks that grow from the lower jaw. These tusks are often decorated with lacquer or delicate scrimshaw. Their skin tones range from pale, wintry grey to deep earthen browns, often covered in patches of coarse, dark hair along the spine and forearms. Their eyes are sharp and intelligent, frequently coming in shades of amber or steely blue. They dress in heavy layered garments that combine the aesthetics of heavy wool kaftans with the elegant silhouettes of silk-wrapped waistbands.
Society & Culture
Rujin society is built upon the dual pillars of 'Reciprocity' and 'The Flow.' In their mountain homelands, they organize into clans led by Tusk-Mothers who manage spiritual affairs and Boyar-Chiefs who handle defense. Their culture is a meticulous fusion of northern austerity and Eastern ritual. They value tea ceremonies performed over samovars, poetry recited in the steam of communal bathhouses, and the rigorous discipline of the blade. For the Rujin, every act is a contract with the spirits; to take a life or a resource without a ritual of thanks is to invite the 'Soul-Frost,' a state of spiritual stagnation.
Religion & Alignment
The Rujin Spirits are the center of their moral world. This animistic system views the world as a lattice of overlapping spiritual territories. They follow the guidance of the Gorvash (River-Speakers) who interpret the will of the water and the seasonal thaws. Their alignment usually leans toward Lawful Neutral, as they are bound by strict codes of clan conduct and the 'Rites of the Herd,' which ensure the survival of the migratory animals they protect. They do not view gods as masters but as powerful neighbors who must be placated with smoke and song.
Homelands & Architecture
Their architecture consists of 'Shrine-Steads,' which are heavy timber longhouses with steep, multi-tiered gabled roofs designed to shed heavy snow. These buildings are often decorated with red-and-black painted carvings of boar spirits and river waves. In the Szithan Empire, enslaved Rujin live in sunken pit-shacks, though they maintain secret ice-smoke altars hidden within the city's sewers or cellars. Freed Rujin often settle in high-altitude colonies where the air is cold and the water is clear.
Relationships With Other Peoples
The Rujin harbor a deep, generational resentment toward the River Elves of the Szithan Empire, whom they view as graceful but soul-less usurpers. They find kinships with the stout mountain-folk (dwarf-like) and the pragmatic humans of the northern reaches. Most other races see Rujin as intimidating and stoic, though those who share a drink in a Rujin smokehouse quickly learn of their profound capacity for warmth, music, and loyalty.
