The Unfading are living monuments of the world's first civilizations, walking the streets of modern metropolises as silent, eternal predators. They are beast-folk who simply cannot die by mortal hands, possessing a patience that spans across the rise and fall of empires. To play an Unfading is to embody a creature for whom time is an irrelevant concept and whose only true peers are the gods themselves.
Physical Description
The Unfading are massive, bipedal beast-folk whose features often blend the aspects of lions, wolves, and great bulls. Their bodies are dense with corded muscle that feels as hard as cured leather. Their fur is unnaturally pristine, often shimmering with a metallic luster: copper for the young, silver for the centuries-old, and a dull, light-absorbing obsidian for the ancient. Their eyes lack pupils, appearing as glowing orbs of violet, gold, or white light. When they stand still, they possess the terrifying stillness of a statue, and their footfalls make no sound on city cobbles despite their great weight.
Society & Culture
Unfading society is a hidden network of mentors and observers. They do not form their own nations, preferring to inhabit the ancient underbellies or forgotten spires of human cities. They view themselves as the 'Custodians of the Flow,' ensuring that civilization continues to move forward so they remain entertained and occupied. They gather in secret 'Eternity Circles' once every decade to trade secrets that would topple kings. They value memory above all else, and their culture dictates that an Unfading who forgets a friend's name has committed a grave sin.
Religion & Alignment
Most Unfading are True Neutral or Lawful Neutral, viewing the moral squabbles of shorter-lived races as temporary fashions. They rarely worship the gods, seeing them more as distant, often annoying relatives than masters. If they follow a faith, it is usually dedicated to the concept of Order or the Preservation of Knowledge. They believe that as long as they exist, the history of the world can never truly be lost.
Homelands & Architecture
Their 'homelands' are the oldest districts of the world's great cities. They prefer architecture that reflects their own permanence: granite towers, subterranean marble vaults, and iron-bound libraries. An Unfading's lair is often filled with relics from dozen different eras, arranged not by value, but by the personal memories attached to them. They often live in 'Ghost-Walks,' areas of a city that are technically abandoned or condemned, which they maintain through subtle magic or intimidation.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They look upon other species with a detached, paternalistic affection. To an Unfading, a human is a spark: bright, beautiful, and extinguished in a heartbeat. They find common ground with elves and dwarves but often find their obsession with bloodlines and tradition to be small-minded. They are deeply suspicious of other immortals like fiends or celestials, for such beings represent the only real threat to an Unfading's continued existence.
