The Mirmizar are a stoic, insect-like people who view the world through the lens of the colony. Known for their incredible feats of underground engineering and their ability to communicate through silent, chemical signals, they are often sought as guides in the deepest mountain reaches. An adventuring Mirmizar is often an Outrider, a scout who has developed a sense of self independent of the hive to better protect their kin from unpredictable threats.
Physical Description
The Mirmizar are upright insectoids with an anatomy reflecting their subterranean heritage. Their bodies are covered in thick, segmented chitin that ranges in color from basalt gray to deep amber. While they possess four segmented limbs, they typically walk on two, using their upper appendages for fine manipulation. Their heads are heart-shaped with large, multifaceted eyes that glimmer like polished obsidian. A pair of sensitive antennae constantly twitch atop their brows, tasting the air for pheromones and vibrations. Despite their alien appearance, their movements are graceful and surprisingly quiet across stone surfaces.
Society & Culture
Mirmizar society is organized into Great Hives, yet unlike simpler insects, they value specialized individual intellect. Their culture revolves around the concept of the Great Purpose, the idea that every citizen is a vital stone in a living arch. They do not use currency within their walls, instead practicing a philosophy of absolute resource sharing. Art and history are recorded through scent-jars and tactile carvings along tunnel walls. While the Hive-Queen acts as a biological and spiritual center, the day to day governance is handled by a council of Elder-Architects who debate policy through a mix of spoken language and pheromonal consensus.
Religion & Alignment
Mirmizar culture leans toward Lawful alignments, valuing order and collective welfare above all. They rarely worship external gods, instead venerating the Great Foundation, a personification of the earth and the stability it provides. Those who do seek religion often find themselves drawn to deities of craft, protection, or community. They view chaos not as evil, but as a structural flaw that must be reinforced or excavated for the safety of the whole.
Homelands & Architecture
The Mirmizar carve Inverted Spires deep beneath mountain peaks. These structures are architectural marvels that descend miles into the earth, featuring spiraling galleries and fungal gardens that provide oxygen and light. The stone is often reinforced with a translucent, silk-like resin that is as strong as steel. Their homes are communal, with wide chambers designed for multi-limbed occupants to rest against angled walls rather than flat beds.
Relationships With Other Peoples
The Mirmizar are wary of the 'scattered-minds,' their term for most humanoid races who lack collective intuition. They hold a deep respect for mountain-dwelling dwarf-kin, with whom they often trade ore for organic textiles. They are frequently at odds with cave-dwelling goblin-kin and the subterranean spider-cults of the deep gloom-caverns, who they view as chaotic predators. Surface dwellers often find Mirmizar unsettlingly focused and difficult to read, given their reliance on non-verbal chemical cues.
