The brinewrought are memory-bearing wanderers from the lightless seas, aberrant in form but meticulous in their customs. They hear emotion in moving water, preserve the thoughts of the dead in living reefs, and regard every shoreline as the edge of an enormous, unfinished conversation. A brinewrought adventurer may be an exile, an emissary, a salvager, or simply someone who has begun hearing a voice in the current that no one else can perceive.

Brinewrought are aquatic humanoids whose bodies seem assembled from several plausible forms at once. Their skin may be smooth as wet stone, scaled like a river predator, or veiled in translucent membranes. Most possess large, dark eyes protected by a second inner lid, flexible fins along the forearms and calves, and narrow gill slits beneath the ribs or jaw. Their fingers are long and webbed, with soft pads capable of sensing vibration. Bioluminescent markings drift across their bodies in response to emotion, temperature, and nearby magic. No two brinewrought look entirely alike. Some are elegant and almost elf-like, while others have broad shoulders, lamprey mouths, tentacular hair, shell plates, or multiple pupils. These variations are considered natural expressions of a shared ancestry rather than signs of separate peoples.

Brinewrought society is organized around currents, both literal and social. A current is a network of obligations, memories, trade, and kinship that links individuals across great distances. Their settlements are led by councils of tide-keepers, navigators, memory-singers, and reef tenders. Personal identity is important, but isolation is viewed with concern because a person without meaningful connections is believed to become spiritually stagnant. The dead are not buried. Their memories are dissolved into coral nurseries, preserved in pearl-like mnemonic nodules, or sung into the water during the Last Immersion. Brinewrought hospitality is generous but intimate. Guests may be asked to share a harmless memory before receiving food or shelter.

Most brinewrought revere no single deity. They honor the Deep Chorus, a collective presence believed to arise from the memories of all living waters. Individual communities may identify this presence with a sea god, ancestral spirits, an ancient leviathan, or the ocean itself. Their ceremonies involve synchronized breathing, bioluminescent displays, and the exchange of carefully chosen memories. Brinewrought value balance, but they are not inherently peaceful. Their societies include compassionate healers, ruthless depth-priests, pragmatic raiders, and ascetic prophets. They tend toward neutral alignments, with lawful brinewrought emphasizing vows and tradition while chaotic individuals follow intuition and changing currents.

Brinewrought settlements grow rather than being built. Coral, shell, glass sponge, and mineral deposits are cultivated into vaulted chambers, ribbed bridges, and spiraling towers that channel currents through every neighborhood. Important places are marked by living gardens of anemones and luminous algae. Their oldest cities are partly physical and partly remembered, with certain rooms appearing only when the correct song, scent, or emotional state is present.

Brinewrought are fascinated by land-dwellers but wary of their appetite for ownership and borders. They often form intense friendships with sailors, fisherfolk, druids, and scholars. Coastal communities may treat them as omens, monsters, or valuable guides. Among aquatic peoples, they are respected for their endurance and feared for their ability to preserve memories that others would prefer forgotten. Brinewrought rarely divide the world into civilized and savage. Instead, they distinguish between peoples who honor their surroundings and those who consume without listening.
