Small but relentlessly scrappy, the Crag-Kith are masters of the vertical world. Where others see a sheer cliff or a narrow crevice, these wiry mountain dwellers see a highway or a home. They survive through sheer wit and a refusal to be pinned down by larger foes.
Physical Description
Crag-Kith possess lean, wiry frames built for agility rather than bulk. Their skin tones range from mossy greens to dusty, slate-like grays, often matching the lichen and stones of their mountain homes. They have oversized, pointed ears that are highly mobile, large expressive eyes usually in shades of amber or red, and wide mouths filled with sharp, uneven teeth. Their hands and feet are relatively large, featuring rough, calloused pads and thick, hooked nails that aid in gripping rock faces.
Society & Culture
Crag-Kith culture is a meritocracy based on ingenuity and contribution to the 'warren.' Unlike their more aggressive low-land cousins, mountain dwellers value the 'Great Scrounge,' a philosophy where no resource is wasted. They are organized into tight-knit family units that share everything. Leadership is usually held by the 'Peak-Caller,' a member who has proven they can navigate the most treacherous terrains and lead the clan to safety during winter storms.
Religion & Alignment
Most Crag-Kith are Neutral, focusing on survival and the well-being of their specific clan. They rarely follow organized deities, instead venerating the 'Primal Echo,' a spiritual personification of the mountain itself. They believe that every landslide or avalanche is a lesson and every hidden cave is a gift. Some clans have begun to adopt the worship of gods of trickery or the forge, finding kinship in cleverness and mechanical tinkering.
Homelands & Architecture
Crag-Kith settlements are marvels of precarious engineering. They build suspended villages within deep chasms, utilizing intricate networks of hempen ropes, wooden pulleys, and stone-carved alcoves. Their architecture is largely invisible to those on the ground, tucked away beneath overhangs or inside the very 'lungs' of the mountain: natural chimney vents that provide warmth from geothermal activity.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Because they are often scavengers, other species frequently view them with suspicion. However, many mountain trading posts have come to rely on Crag-Kith as expert scouts and guides. They have a centuries-old, begrudging respect for dwarf-like kin, often trading rare alpine herbs and minerals for metal tools and ale. They are naturally wary of larger humanoids but are quick to forge alliances if they perceive a shared benefit.
