A Quaybound Revenant is a person pulled back from death by an unfinished promise, a duty denied its conclusion, or a truth that refused to stay buried. They are not mindless corpses, nor are they simply immortal survivors. Every revenant lives under a question: what must happen before I am allowed to stop? The Watchman of Quay 7 is the classic example, a salt-stiff sentinel who has guarded an empty pier for decades because he remembers promising that someone would be there when the last bell rang.

Quaybound Revenants resemble the people they were in life, but death leaves a visible signature. Their skin may carry the gray cast of drowned stone, their veins may show faintly beneath translucent flesh, or their hair may remain wet regardless of weather. Their eyes often reflect lantern light with a dim silver gleam. Wounds do not always close correctly, though they cease to bleed once the revenant returns. Some retain a pulse that comes only when they remember being alive. Their clothing is usually the last outfit they wore, repaired and altered over the years into a uniform of purpose. They smell faintly of rain, dust, old flowers, or the place where they died.

Revenant culture is built around remembrance and conclusion. They keep meticulous ledgers of names, promises, debts, crimes, and last words. Their gatherings are quiet, because every member has learned how easily a careless statement can become an anchor. Communities appoint Witnesses to hear unfinished business and Stewards to help revenants distinguish a true obligation from an obsession. Celebrations are uncommon but deeply cherished, usually honoring a revenant who has found release. The living may participate, though they are expected to bring a written account of something they are willing to let go.

Revenants are not inherently evil or good. Their alignment often reflects the moral character they possessed in life, though the pressure of unfinished business can make them rigid, vengeful, or self-sacrificing. Some revere gods of graves, thresholds, oaths, or safe passage. Others distrust all divine powers, believing that no god answered when they called. Many maintain personal rites rather than organized worship, such as lighting a lamp for the dead, polishing a weapon that was never used, or speaking one honest sentence before dawn.

Revenants do not possess a homeland in the usual sense. They gather around sites of return, establishing quiet enclaves in disused stations, sealed chapels, tide-battered signal houses, and former guard posts. Their architecture favors thresholds, observation points, and durable materials. Doors are painted with the names of those who may enter, windows are positioned to command roads or water, and every communal hall contains a table set for the absent.

Living communities often regard revenants with a mixture of gratitude, unease, and superstition. A revenant may be welcomed as a guardian, consulted as a witness, or driven away as an omen. Other undead generally recognize revenants as troublesome exceptions, beings who retain too much selfhood to belong comfortably among the dead. Revenants are protective of mourners and suspicious of institutions that conceal loss. They often form intense, brief friendships with mortals, knowing that every living companion is moving toward the fate they escaped.
