Perched upon the highest summits where even the boldest eagles hesitate to nest, the Crag-Dweller Goblins have built a society of scrap and survival. These nimble, green-skinned climbers navigate vertical cliffs with the ease of lizards and view the world below as a buffet of scavengeable wonders. While their frantic energy and chatter can be overwhelming, no species is better equipped to guide a party through a treacherous mountain pass or MacGyver a bridge out of rusty chains and old rope.
Physical Description
Crag-Dwellers are compact humanoids with skin ranging from mossy green to lichen grey. Their ears are exceptionally long and mobile, twitching at the slightest breeze or falling pebble. They possess disproportionately large hands with calloused fingertips and sticky pads that aid in climbing. Their eyes are wide and bulbous, usually amber or pale yellow, designed to catch the thin light of mountain peaks. Most wear layers of reinforced leather and wool, draped with various clattering tools and trophies found in the high reaches.
Society & Culture
Crag-Dweller culture is a chaotic meritocracy based on what a person can find or fix. They live in vertically oriented settlements known as 'Warrens,' which are often carved into the sheer faces of mountains. Their society prizes resourcefulness above all else: a goblin who can repair a broken crossbow with a bit of sinew is more respected than one who simply knows how to fire it. They have a complex oral history composed of exaggerated songs and tales of 'The Big Grab,' a mythical event where they believe they will eventually salvage the moon from the sky.
Religion & Alignment
Most Crag-Dwellers lean toward Neutral or Chaotic alignments, valuing individual survival and communal cleverness over strict laws. They rarely worship distant gods, preferring to venerate local mountain spirits or 'Saint Scraps,' a folk hero said to have built the first goblin hang-glider. Their morality is often transactional: help the Warren, and the Warren helps you.
Homelands & Architecture
Their architecture is a marvel of precarious engineering. Homes are often suspended from heavy chains or wedged into natural clefts in the rock. Bridges made of woven mountain-grass and salvaged planks connect disparate dwellings, swaying dangerously in the wind. These structures are designed to be easily collapsed if predators or invaders attempt to cross, making their cities incredibly difficult to siege.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They view 'Ground-Walkers' (races that live in valleys) with a mix of pity and predatory interest. They often trade rare mountain minerals and medicinal herbs with dwarves or mountain-dwelling orcs in exchange for iron and finished goods. While they have a reputation for thievery, many Crag-Dweller clans pride themselves on being honest, if expensive, mountain guides.
