The Vandermous are quiet, observant forest-dwellers who prioritize survival through blending in and community cooperation. Often mistaken for simple foragers, these fur-covered folk possess a deep, inquisitive intellect and an uncanny ability to disappear into their surroundings. If you enjoy playing a character who values the 'unseen presence' and prefers a clever solution over a violent confrontation, the Vandermous offers a pack-focused perspective rooted in caution and curiosity.
Vandermous appear as lithe, upright rodent-like humanoids covered in a coat of short, dense fur that ranges from bark-brown to slate-grey. They possess large, mobile ears capable of independent movement and dark, shimmering eyes that capture even the faintest light. Their faces feature twitching whiskers and slightly elongated snouts. Despite their Medium size, they tend to carry themselves with a hunched, furtive posture that makes them appear smaller than they truly are. They favor unassuming, practical clothing, particularly voluminous hoods and layered tunics with hidden pockets to store the various trinkets they find.
Society for a Vandermous is centered on the 'Warren,' a collective unit where every resource is shared and every member has a role. They value information and craftsmanship above gold. Their culture is one of quietude; they speak in low tones and have developed a complex series of hand signals to communicate while foraging. Curiosity is their primary vice, often leading them to watch larger 'loud' folk from the safety of the brush. While they are naturally cautious, they are not cowardly; a Vandermous will defend their Warren with a coordinated, tactical ferocity that catches many predators off guard.
Most Vandermous lean toward Neutral or Lawful Neutral alignments. They respect the laws of the forest and the internal codes of their Warrens. They often worship deities associated with secrets, shadows, hearth-fires, and the preservation of nature. They view the world as a complex puzzle to be understood rather than a territory to be conquered.
Their settlements are marvels of camouflage, built into the hollows of massive ancient trees or constructed as elaborate semi-subterranean complexes beneath the root systems of forest floors. Vandermous architecture utilizes living plants, weaving branches and thorns together to create natural barriers. To an outsider, a Vandermous village might look like nothing more than a particularly dense thicket or a moss-covered hill.
They view Elf-like people with a distant respect, admiring their longevity and grace. Conversely, they find the boisterous nature of Humans and the clattering metal of Dwarf-like folk to be exhausting and dangerous. They often maintain cautious trade relationships with Goblin-kin, sharing a mutual understanding of what it means to be overlooked by the larger world.
