The Vostrix are primeval predators that blur the line between sentient ancestors and prehistoric beasts. Though they possess a cunning intelligence and their own guttural tongue, their physiology remains that of a powerful, predatory dinosaur. They are often sought after as living siege engines or loyal mounts for smaller allies, provided the rider can provide the necessary chain-harness and a steady supply of high-quality beef to keep the creature's eldritch hunger at bay.
Physical Description
Vostrix look like a terrifying synthesis of a dromaeosaurid dinosaur and something from a nightmare. Their bodies are covered in pebbled, iridescent scales that shimmer with a strange, oily sheen characteristic of aberrant life. They possess powerful hind legs designed for sudden bursts of speed and long, stiff tails used for balance. Their forelimbs end in grasping claws, and their elongated snouts are filled with serrated teeth. Unlike mundane lizards, a Vostrix often has vestigial, blinking eyes along its neck or patches of crystalline growths that pulse with a faint light when they are agitated.
Society & Culture
Vostrix society is built on a foundation of 'The Hunt and the Bond.' They do not build cities but rather maintain 'Groves of Iron' where they craft the heavy chain harnesses they wear. These chains are not signs of slavery but of self-imposed discipline and social rank. A Vostrix without a harness is considered a wild animal, a danger to its own kin. They value physical prowess and the ability to provide for the pack. Interestingly, they have a highly developed sense of 'meat-lore,' where the quality and preparation of beef is used to mark treaties, weddings, and coming-of-age ceremonies.
Religion & Alignment
Vostrix tend toward Neutral alignments, though their predatory instincts can lean toward Evil if left unchecked. They rarely worship gods of the pantheon, instead venerating the 'Great Maw,' a personification of the void from which their aberrant ancestors crawled. They believe that by taming themselves and others, they prevent the world from being swallowed by chaos.
Homelands & Architecture
They reside in massive, open-air pits or stone-walled compounds. Their architecture is brutalist, consisting of heavy stones and thick iron rings embedded in floors for tethering during sleep. They prefer warm, humid climates but can adapt to cold if they have access to enough caloric energy, usually in the form of raw livestock.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Most species view Vostrix with a mix of awe and terror. Smaller folk, such as halflings or gnome-kin, often strike bargains to serve as 'Rider-Partners.' These partnerships are sacred. A Vostrix allows a trusted ally to mount them, provided the rider understands the specific 'beef entertainment' required to keep the Vostrix focused during the heat of battle. They find 'civilized' politics confusing, preferring the directness of a challenge or a shared meal.
