Play a Vulkir if you want to be a vibrant, pint-sized powerhouse of the deep earth. These salamander-folk combine incredible physical resilience with the raw power of the magma they call home, possessing the unique ability to shrug off wounds and burn those who dare to strike them.
Physical Description
Vulkir are stout, four-limbed humanoids with moist, rubbery skin and wide, flat heads reminiscent of giant newts. Their hides are canvases of high-contrast warning colors; jet black or obsidian grey mottled with brilliant splashes of safety orange, sunset yellow, or neon crimson. Four feathery, external gills sprout from the base of their necks, glowing softly with internal heat. Their eyes are large, lidless, and golden, possessing horizontal pupils that provide a wide field of vision in the flickering light of lava flows. They possess long, muscular tails that act as both rudders and counterbalance.
Society & Culture
Vulkir society is organized into 'Bubbles' or thermal collectives. They are master alchemists and geothermal engineers, harnessing the pressure of the earth to power complex brass machinery. Despite their fiery environment, they value stillness and deliberation; a Vulkir will often sit motionless for hours in a heat-trance, processing information or dreaming. They view the shedding of skin as a holy act of renewal, and their communal 'Molt-Halls' serve as places of both physical healing and legal arbitration. Wealth is measured not in gold, but in the purity of the minerals one has consumed and integrated into their vibrant skin patterns.
Religion & Alignment
Most Vulkir follow the path of the Great Hearth, a belief system centered on the preservation of the world's internal heat. They tend toward Neutrality, viewing the struggle between good and evil as secondary to the balance of the thermal cycle. However, their fierce protection of their vents can lead surface dwellers to perceive them as Lawful Neutral or even Lawful Evil.
Homelands & Architecture
Their cities are carved directly into the basalt walls surrounding active volcanic vents. Architecture consists of interconnected obsidian domes and brass bridges, often submerged partially in mineral-rich magma pools. These dwellings are designed to be airtight, keeping the high-pressure, sulfurous air concentrated for their specialized respiratory needs. The central hub of any Vulkir city is the Forge-Vent, where communal meals and metalworking take place simultaneously.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Vulkir are wary of surface-dwelling species, whom they view as 'dry and fragile.' They maintain distant but respectful trade relations with dwarf-like mountain kin for refined ores. They find elf-like forest dwellers incomprehensible due to their dependence on sunlight and greenery. They are often at odds with greedy subterranean raiding parties who seek to tap the Vulkir's geothermal energy sources.
