Play a Dunespawn if you wish to embody the primal power of the desert. Descended from the legendary Queen Great Sand Wyrm, these hardy survivors sense the world through vibrations and possess a physical resilience born of the blistering heat and shifting sands. They are the masters of the dunes, viewing the harsh wasteland as a land of plenty where others see only death.
Physical Description
The Dunespawn are bipedal humanoids characterized by their heavy, segmented plates of chitin that mimic the coloration of the wastes. These plates range from pale ivory and sun-bleached bone to deep, iron-rich crimson. Their faces lack a conventional nose, featuring instead heat-sensitive pits along their jawline and a pair of milky, protective eyelids that guard against scouring winds. Their hands and feet are wide and equipped with shovel-like claws that allow them to displace sand with startling efficiency. Instead of hair, they possess a crest of sensory quills that twitch in response to changes in air pressure.
Society & Culture
Dunespawn culture is built upon the concept of the Drift, a social unit that moves across the desert in cycles corresponding to underground water flows. They are a deeply communal people who view individualism as a secondary trait to the survival of the collective. Water is treated as a sacred currency, and the act of sharing a drink from one's own flask is considered a binding blood-oath. They do not build permanent structures on the surface, preferring to craft intricate, glass-lined tunnel networks that keep them cool during the daylight hours.
Religion & Alignment
Dunespawn religion centers on the Silt-Mother, a deified version of the Great Sand Wyrm who birthed their kind. They believe the desert is a living organism and they are its immune system. Most Dunespawn lean toward Neutral alignments, focusing on the practicalities of survival and the maintenance of their hidden ecosystems rather than the philosophical squabbles of surface-dwellers.
Homelands & Architecture
Their primary strongholds are the Sinking Citadels, massive inverted towers built into the side of deep desert canyons or hidden beneath major dunes. The architecture is organic and curved, utilizing heat-tempered sand and obsidian. They use clever ventilation shafts that catch the wind to whistle music through their halls, signaling the presence of intruders or changes in weather.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They maintain a wary respect for those who survive the wastes, such as nomads and certain hardy goblin-kin. They find the residents of damp, forested lands to be strange and wasteful, often struggling to understand why someone would build a house out of flammable wood rather than reliable stone. To a Dunespawn, a person's worth is measured by how little they take from the land and how much they contribute to the security of their traveling party.
