A Stormvein adventurer may be a patient guide, a fugitive from a feuding ridge clan, a sacred bell-keeper, or a restless child of the high places who has finally come to learn what lies beyond the storm wall.

Stormveins are broad-shouldered humanoids with dense musculature, strong hands, and weather-darkened skin ranging from slate gray and umber to deep violet. Fine lines of pale blue, silver, or warm copper trace their shoulders, ribs, and forearms, brightening faintly before a storm. Their hair is thick and often worn in braided cords weighted with beads, bells, or strips of colored cloth. Their eyes commonly have clouded irises with pinpricks of electric light. Most have small ridges along the brow, collarbone, or spine, varying by family and subspecies. Their voices carry unusually well across open ground, a trait prized in both song and emergency calls.

Stormvein society is organized into ridge households, each responsible for a stretch of trail, pasture, beacon line, or water source. Leadership is earned through service and demonstrated judgment rather than inherited automatically. Major decisions are made in listening circles, where participants sit in silence until the wind shifts or the communal bells settle. Music is central to daily life, with low drums and tuned bells used for celebration, ceremony, and long-distance communication. Courtship often begins with shared work, especially a difficult climb or a season of maintaining trails. Stormvein spirituality is animistic and ancestral. They honor the First Thunder, understood variously as a creator, a primordial voice, or the first warning ever given to the living world. Shrines are built around lightning-struck trees, resonant stones, and ancient bells. Priests called Listeners interpret weather, dreams, and unusual echoes, but rarely claim absolute certainty. Stormveins tend toward balanced or benevolent alignments, valuing communal survival over rigid law, though oath-bound guardians and fiercely independent wanderers are both common.

Their settlements cling to cliffs and elevated shelves, connected by rope bridges, switchback paths, and beacon towers. Homes are built low against the wind from dark stone, packed clay, and layered timber. Roofs are weighted with chains, while every communal hall contains a storm shelter and a ring of tuned bells. The largest villages are arranged around open courtyards where residents can watch the sky and hear warning signals from neighboring peaks.

Stormveins respect people who keep their word under pressure and distrust those who treat the Reaches as a picturesque wilderness rather than a living homeland. They trade wool, stormstone, medicinal fungi, and skilled guides with lowland communities, though they resent outsiders who exploit their passes or mine sacred caverns. They have longstanding friendships with caravaners, rangers, and fisherfolk, while their relationships with wealthy industrial powers are often tense. Among themselves, disagreements are expected, but abandoning a member during a crisis is considered one of the gravest possible betrayals.
