The Vast-Walkers are the titans of the open prairie: massive, muscular folk whose ancestors were said to have carved the mountain passes with their bare hands. They represent the ultimate physical powerhouses of the grasslands, capable of carrying the weight of a wagon or holding a line against a stampeding herd without flinching. If you want to play a character whose sheer physical presence dictates the flow of battle and whose strength is legendary, the Vast-Walker is your calling.
Vast-Walkers stand at the absolute limit of the Medium size category, often towering over humans and even dwarf-kin. Their skin possesses a weathered, leathery texture often compared to cured hide or dried clay, providing a natural resilience to the whipping winds of the plains. Their musculature is exceptionally dense, making them significantly heavier than their height would suggest. Many possess hair that resembles coarse, golden prairie grass or deep earth-toned wool, and their eyes are frequently the color of a stormy horizon or burnished bronze.
Vast-Walker culture revolves around the concept of the Great Weight. This is the philosophical belief that every individual must be strong enough to carry their own burdens and the burdens of those who falter. Their society is organized into traveling bands that follow the seasonal migrations of massive grazing beasts. They do not value gold as much as they value feats of endurance and utilitarian craft. Wrestling is their primary social lubricant: a way to settle disputes, greet friends, and find suitable mates.
Most Vast-Walkers follow a path of Neutrality, viewing the world as a series of natural forces to be endured and overcome. They often venerate the Earth-Father, a faceless deity representing the soil and the wind. While they are rarely cruel, they are blunt and pragmatic. They believe that an individual's word should be as solid as their physical frame.
Permanent settlements are rare, but when they do build, Vast-Walkers favor megalithic architecture. They utilize massive, un-mortared stones that only their kind could move. Their heartlands are the endless steppes and high plateaus where the view extends for leagues and no forest can hem them in.
They get along well with halflings and other nomadic folk who share their love of the open road, though they often find the 'small folk' a bit frantic. They have a begrudging respect for dwarf-kin due to their shared appreciation for stone and stability. They find urban-dwelling humans to be overly complex and physically fragile, often offering to 'help' them carry things out of genuine, if slightly patronizing, pity.
