Play a Mycelian if you wish to embody the cyclic beauty of life and decay. These fungal folk are more than just mushroom-men: they are the stewards of the world's natural recycling system, possessing a quiet wisdom and a physical resilience born from the deep earth. As a Mycelian, you bring a unique perspective to any party, viewing death not as an end but as a transition, and utilizing a variety of spores to shield your allies or rot your enemies.
Physical Description
Mycelians are humanoid figures whose flesh has the consistency of a firm mushroom or wood-bracket fungus. Their skin ranges from pale cream and earthy ochre to vibrant purples and deep charcoal. They do not possess hair; instead, their heads are topped with fungal caps, gills, or branching antlers made of hardened spores. Their eyes are often solid orbs of a single luminescent color, lacking pupils. Instead of sweat, they exude a fine, faintly shimmering mist of spores when agitated or exerting themselves.
Society & Culture
Mycelian culture is rooted in the concept of the Silent Choir. While they are individuals, they feel a sympathetic resonance with other living things. They value communal harmony over individual glory. Decisions in Mycelian circles are made through a process of shared meditation until a consensus is reached. They find the frantic pace of shorter-lived races amusing yet exhausting. Their art consists of shaped wood and bioluminescent murals that change color based on the humidity of the room.
Religion & Alignment
Most Mycelians are True Neutral or Neutral Good. they follow the Way of the Recycled Path, a belief system that emphasizes the balance between growth and decay. They rarely worship anthropomorphic gods, instead offering prayers to the Great Compost or the Spirit of the Wood. They view the undead as an abomination because it halts the natural cycle of returning energy to the earth.
Homelands & Architecture
They dwell in cities known as Rhizomes. These are often carved into the roots of massive, ancient trees or excavated in limestone caverns. Their architecture is organic: they use specialized spores to grow walls of hardened cellulose and shelves of shelf-fungi that serve as beds and storage. Their homes are always damp and filled with the scent of rain-soaked earth and sweet fermentation.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Mycelians are generally welcoming but appear detached to outsiders. They get along famously with elf-like and gnome-kin cultures who respect the forest. They are wary of dwarves, whose industrial mining can disrupt the mycelial networks they protect. They often view humans as chaotic and unnecessarily loud, though they admire the human drive to create a legacy before their brief lives end.
