Veilborn are slender to broad-shouldered humanoids with skin ranging from peat-black and gray-green to muted copper, cream, and blue-white. Their hair is commonly dark, silver, or reed-pale, often worn in tight braids threaded with beads, scraps of ribbon, or tiny bells whose clappers have been removed. Their eyes reflect faintly in darkness, with irises in amber, cloudy blue, moss green, or dull violet. Many bear natural crescent markings along the throat, wrists, or cheekbones. Buildings are low, narrow, and heavily insulated, with shuttered windows, reed roofs, and covered walkways connecting neighboring homes. Every settlement has a listening tower, a bell house, and at least one road that is intentionally left unlit. Doors are marked with carved warnings rather than family crests, and guest rooms are placed near the entrance so visitors need not cross the private heart of a household.

Veilborn are cautious with outsiders but rarely hostile without cause. They respect practical skill, direct kindness, and people who keep their word after circumstances change. Brightland peoples often mistake their reserve for suspicion or melancholy, while Veilborn may find open societies exhausting and careless with private matters. They maintain old friendships with certain goblin-kin ferry clans, human road wardens, and moss-dwelling fey, though each alliance is governed by precise customs. Veilborn communities are wary of imperial powers, treasure hunters, and anyone who treats the Hushed Marches as an empty wilderness.
